Roy Halladay wins NL Cy Young<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIt was almost a foregone conclusion that the Florida Marlins would trade Dan Uggla. But the return they got for him yesterday was laughable.<\/p>\n
Florida shipped Uggla \u2013 the only second baseman in Major League Baseball history with four straight 30-homer seasons \u2013 to the Braves for Omar Infante and Mike Dunn. Huh? Infante did an admirable job as Atlanta\u2019s utility man last season, batting .321, but he\u2019s still a glorified bench player. Dunn is a solid left-handed reliever. Even worse for the Marlins, they made the deal within their own division. They\u2019ll be seeing plenty of Uggla next year.<\/p>\n
Roy Halladay was named 2010 National League Cy Young winner yesterday. He won the award unanimously and became just the fifth pitcher ever to win it in both leagues, joining Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Gaylord Perry. Halladay led the NL with 21 wins and was first in the majors in innings, complete games and shutouts.<\/p>\n
We haven\u2019t seen the big offseason waves yet but the ripples are starting to form. The Texas Rangers flew to Arkansas to meet with Cliff Lee yesterday. The Chicago White Sox held preliminary discussions with Adam Dunn; I have to think he\u2019d have a shot at 50 homers if he jumped from Nationals Park to U.S. Cellular Field. The Marlins are nearing a three-year deal with catcher John Buck, who clubbed 20 homers with Toronto last year. <\/p>\n
NFL news: McNabb\u2019s deal has out clause; NFL looking into LaRon Landry spitting incident<\/strong><\/p>\nMaybe the Washington Redskins\u2019 contract extension with Donovan McNabb was just a PR move after all? And not a horrific decision? It turns out that he\u2019s only truly guaranteed $3.5 million, not $40 million. Washington has the option to cut McNabb after this season and owe him no extra money. Phew.<\/p>\n
Another week, another spitting incident in the NFL. The league checks for video evidence any time a player is accused of spitting on another during a game. Last week, the NFL didn\u2019t have enough evidence to punish Le\u2019Ron McClain. Now, it\u2019s investigating LaRon Landry.<\/p>\n
Philadelphia Eagles center Mike McGlynn claims that Landry spit on him during the Eagles\u2019 domination of the Redskins on Monday night. Landry denies it, claiming: \u201cI\u2019m aggressive. I\u2019m not that type of player.\u201d<\/p>\n
NHL news: Scott Hartnell claims Max Lapierre choked him; Chris Pronger steals game puck<\/strong><\/p>\nThere\u2019s no love lost between the Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens after last year\u2019s playoff series. After Montreal\u2019s 3-0 win last night, Philly captain Mike Richards claimed that P.K. Subban \u201cthinks he\u2019s better than a lot of people\u201d and \u201chasn\u2019t earned respect.\u201d; Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez caught Chris Pronger trying to steal the game puck after Carey Price\u2019s shutout; and Scott Hartnell accused Max Lapierre of choking him during a scrum. Good times.<\/p>\n
NCAA football news: FBI interviews former MSU player in Newton probe<\/strong><\/p>\nCameron Newton hasn\u2019t dodged the axe yet. The probe about his camp and\/or family seeking cash during his recruitment continues. On Tuesday, a former Mississippi State player spoke with the FBI: John Bond. He told MSU officials last January that he\u2019d been asked by Kenny Rogers for $180,000 in exchange for Newton\u2019s commitment to the Bulldogs. Bond has no further comments right now because of the \u201congoing nature\u201d of the investigation.<\/p>\n
