Miami (Ohio)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Redhawks have improved greatly this year and are in the race in the MAC East.\u00a0 While their rivals Ohio and Temple duke it out Tuesday night they get what should be a layup this week against a winless Akron team.\u00a0 They finish against Temple and if the Owls beat the Bobcats that will essentially be a divisional playoff game.\u00a0 The Redhawks are already bowl eligible and are looking for more.<\/p>\n

How good the Redhawks really are is a matter of debate.\u00a0 Their most impressive win this was a 31-10 beating of a bad Colorado State team.\u00a0 Mostly this team has been just good enough to feast on a weak year in the MAC, especially in the East where only 3 of 8 teams have winning records on the season.\u00a0 Despite the winning record they are giving up 7 more points than they score on a per game average.\u00a0 When they have strayed outside the conference they have been beaten badly.<\/p>\n

These teams used to meet every year but haven\u2019t met since 2007.\u00a0 Miami has dominated the series winning 8 of the last 10 but most of that was during an era when they were among the best teams in the conference and sometimes even garnered national recognition.\u00a0 Akron may be winless to date but the talent gap is likely not as wide as their records this season indicate.<\/p>\n

Akron<\/strong><\/p>\n

There really isn\u2019t much to say about the Zips.\u00a0 \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

They don\u2019t have a win on the season\u00a0 and the only time they have really been close was against FBS Gardner-Webb, losing by a point in the second week of the season.\u00a0 A winless season wasn\u2019t what was expected but neither was much better than that.\u00a0 After Miami they finish with a home game against Buffalo who is also quite hapless so maybe there is some hope for a victory there.<\/p>\n

Even though Akron is winless they are neither the worst team on offense or defense in the nation – but they are pretty close.\u00a0 Last week against Ball State QB Patrick Nicely had his best day of the season throwing for 4TDs.\u00a0 That represents more than half of his season total and the Zips are not going to be able to do anything on offense unless he improves.\u00a0 Nicely has the worst QB rating of any passer with more than 100 attempts this year.\u00a0 To be honest it isn\u2019t even close.<\/p>\n

Although 0-10 straight up the Zips are 3-7 ATS so they are capable of surprising like they did last week when they exploded for 30 points for the first time since week 2.\u00a0 Given what they have shown thus far another outburst is unlikely but you can\u2019t overestimate the power of trying to avoid winless immortality.<\/p>\n

The Pick:<\/strong> I have a hard time believing Akron can keep it close against a team with something to play for.\u00a0 I\u2019m backing Miami.<\/p>\n
