#23 Virginia Tech Hokies Predictions: 2010\/2011 NCAA Future Lines<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Virginia Tech heads into this season with a ton of optimism and expectations, but they did not have the best off-season with the season ending knee injury to backup F J.T. Thompson and the up-in-the-air condition of Florida transfer F Allan Chaney. Thomson averaged 7.6 ppg and 4.6 rpg last season and head coach Seth Greenberg stated,\u00a0\u201cJ.T. is a huge part of what we have been able to accomplish over the last three years. His work ethic, energy, toughness and skill level will most definitely be missed.\u201d<\/em> Chaney found out he has a heart condition and it does not look like he will suit up this season for the Hokies.<\/p>\n

OK, so we covered the bad, but now the good. The Virginia Tech backcourt may be the best on the ACC with both guards returning, who were both the Hokies\u2019 leading scorers last season in Malcolm Delaney (20.2 ppg) and Dorenzo Hudson (15.2 ppg). Delaney also averaged 4.5 assists per game, as he is a great distributor of the rock. He has started for 3 years and led the ACC in scoring and was 6th<\/sup> in assists, and 9th<\/sup> in 3-point field goals (1.9 per game) last season. He will have to have another good season and shoot the rock well from outside since the Hokies do not have a lot of inside game. Delaney was one of the Top 50 players named to the John R. Wooden Award watch list.<\/p>\n

At the F position Jeff Allen (12 ppg 7.4 rpg last season) returns and he will be counted on to be the rock inside for the Hokies. F Cadarian Raines only averaged 1.5 ppg and 1.8 rog last season, but with the loss of Thomson he will be THE big man off the bench this season.<\/p>\n

Virginia Tech has almost 47 ppg returning in Delaney, Hudson, and Allen, who are all seniors giving Virginia Tech a ton of veteran experience. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Senior wingman Terrell Bell (6.1 ppg 6.1 rpg last season) and junior F Victor Davila (5.3 ppg 4.2 rpg) also are returning starters and these 2 may be counted on fore more scoring this season. When asked about his experienced players Greenberg said,\u00a0\u201cThose five guys are as good as any in the country. I like our team. We\u2019ve got some toughness. We\u2019ve got experience. We\u2019ve got maturity. We\u2019ve got good guards. That\u2019s a pretty good combination.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Can the Hokies hit the glass? That is a big question for them this season. Bell and Allen are legit rebounders, but the Hokies lack size since their tallest player is 6\u20199\u201d. They may struggle this season against teams that have a legit C, as there is no C on the entire Virginia Tech roster this season.<\/p>\n

The Hokies did not have a very good recruiting class, as the only freshman they have that may see significant playing time are SF Jarell Eddie and PG Tyrone Garland. With Thomson out Eddie may get PT right away, but at 6\u20196\u201d hitting the glass is an issue at the F spot. Garland will likely back up Delaney and if he can contribute Delaney will not have to play a ton of minutes. Chaney may be their best recruit and he will definitely be a valuable addition to the frontcourt, but it remains to be seen if he will play.<\/p>\n

Virginia Tech learned their lesson from last season, as even though they won 23 games they were left out of the Big Dance. Why? Well, they played a weak pre-season schedule not facing one ranked team. This season they play a tougher schedule before ACC play begins facing #3 Kansas State and #8 Purdue.<\/p>\n

Surprising stat<\/strong>: F Jeff Allen is the ACC\u2019s active career rebound leader with 781.
\nStrengths<\/strong>: Experience and guard play
\nWeaknesses<\/strong>: height, rebounding, and a legit C
\nBig Dance?<\/strong> Probable, but they have to play well in the early in the season against solid teams and cannot lose to teams in the ACC that they should beat.<\/p>\n

Virginia Tech Win total prediction for 2010-11<\/p>\n

Last season the Hokies won 23 games and were left out of the Big Dance, but this season I think they will win around 25 games and get an invite to go dancing.<\/p>\n
