(23) North Carolina State Wolfpack (6-2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wasn\u2019t N.C. State supposed to be a pretender? All of a sudden, the Wolfpack shocked Florida State last week and it looks like bettors have to re-evaluate their understanding of this team.<\/p>\n

N.C. State has quietly put together an elite offense, ranking 25th<\/sup> in the country with 438.6 yards per game. Behind Russell Wilson, the Wolfpack also have the country\u2019s No. 15 passing offense. Last week against FSU, however, was particularly interesting because Wilson showed some surprising versatility.<\/p>\n

He entered the Florida State game riding a streak of four straight 300-yard passing efforts. Over that span, he had 10 touchdown passes. However, Wilson also threw nine picks during that stretch. Against the Seminoles last week, he threw the ball about half as often as he normally does and made plays with his feet instead. Wilson ran a season-high 17 times for 69 yards and three touchdowns. Maybe he\u2019ll start scrambling more often instead of forcing poor throws after this encouraging performance?<\/p>\n

The Wolfpack\u2019s \u201cD\u201d is just average but it came up with a big play when it needed to last week, forcing a Christian Ponder fumble in the dying seconds when Florida State was driving for the win. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n

Clemson Tigers (4-4)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week\u2019s loss to Boston College stung on many levels for Clemson. After enduring some heartbreaking early-season losses and a very tough schedule, the Tigers were poised to make a late-season run. But their momentum halted last week in a 16-10 loss to Boston College.<\/p>\n

Clemson shut down Boston College\u2019s anemic attack for the most part, holding the Eagles to 304 yards and scoring on a pick-six. However, knowing that Boston College was so outstanding against the run, Clemson desperately needed quarterback Kyle Parker to step up.<\/p>\n

He failed his test. Parker was 21 of 39 for 179 yard and two picks. The book is out on Clemson\u2019s offense now. Stop Andre Ellington and the ground game and force Parker to beat you \u2013 because he won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The pick: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Clemson may feel optimistic about this week since it\u2019s at home and N.C. State isn\u2019t great stopping the run. But I don\u2019t share that optimism. Since the Wolfpack won\u2019t have to respect Parker, they\u2019ll key on Ellington.<\/p>\n

Also, N.C. State showed last week that they can be a strong running team when they need to be. Even if Clemson handles Wilson through the air, the Tigers are 72nd<\/sup> in the nation in run defense. I like the Wolfpack to win on the strength of a more versatile offense and a \u201cD\u201d that will at least know exactly how to stop Clemson.<\/p>\n
