2010 Breeders\u2019 Cup Race Preview – The Filly and Mare Turf <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The 2010 Breeders\u2019 Cup<\/strong><\/a> will be run on November 5th and 6th from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This year\u2019s Cup features 14 races over the two day period with 6 races scheduled for Friday and 8 races slated to run on Saturday. <\/p>\n

The Filly and Mare Turf- Friday November 5<\/strong>th<\/strong><\/sup> Post Time: 6:10 P.M. (EST)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Filly and Mare Turf is a Weight for Age race open to thoroughbred fillies and mares age 3 and up. It is contested on a turf track at a distance of 1 3\/8 mile with a total prize purse of $2,000,000. There are five automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race.<\/p>\n

Midday <\/strong><\/p>\n

This filly\u00a0should be back to defend her title after winning the 2009 Filly & Mare Turf last year at Santa Anita. She earned a spot in this year’s field with a victory in the Qatar Prix Vermeille at Longchamp on Sept. 12. Racing in third position for the better part of this race, Midday surged past Ashiyla and\u00a0Plumania in the final few yards to win by 3\/4’s of a length. This victory\u00a0improved her overall record to seven wins in 15 career starts. She will most likely go off as the odd-on-favorite in this race.<\/p>\n

Eclair de Lune <\/strong><\/p>\n

This German-bred filly earned a ‘Win and You’re In” automatic berth for the Filly & Mare Turf with a victory in the grade I $750,000 Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington Park on August 21st. She ran comfortably in second position behind the pacesetter Romacaca for most of the race and surged past Hot Cha Cha down the stretch to win by 1 1\/2 lengths. This was her first North American victory after two previous wins in France.<\/p>\n

Wasted Tears <\/strong><\/p>\n

Dating back to May of last year, this filly won seven straight races including the grade II $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes at Del Mar\u00a0which was a “Win and You’re In” Challenge Cup race for the Filly & Mare Turf. Going off as the favorite, Wasted Tears held off Gotta Have Her on the rail and Lilly Fa Pootz from the outside to win in a ‘photo finish’ over Lilly Fa Pootz by a nose. Her winning streak ended with a fifth place finish in the grade I $400,000\u00a0Abu Dhabi First Lady Stakes on October 9.<\/p>\n

Harmonious <\/strong><\/p>\n

Going off as the favorite in the grade I $400,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland, this filly did not disappoint the bettors as she streaked to a 4 \u00bc length victory over Zagora. Evening\u00a0Jewel finished third, another \u00bd length back. Previously she had won the grade I $250,000 American Oaks Stakes at Hollywood Park on July 3 and finished second in the grade I $300,000 Del Mar Oaks on August 21.<\/p>\n
