Northern Illinois Huskies (6-2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if Northern Illinois hasn\u2019t had a ridiculously tough schedule, the Huskies have to be pleased with the results so far this season. They\u2019ve rattled off five straight dominant wins, scoring at least 31 points in each one and allowing more than 14 points just once.<\/p>\n

The key to Northern Illinois\u2019 success has been its excellent rushing attack, which ranks 11th<\/sup> in the nation with 247.5 yards per game. Chad Spann has been a force, running for 854 yards and 11 touchdowns. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n

Defensively, the Huskies have been no slouches, either. They\u2019re 34th<\/sup> in the country overall and 21st<\/sup> in scoring defense, allowing just 18.4 points per game. They\u2019ve shut the door against often inferior competition; it will be interesting to see how they hold up against Western Michigan\u2019s underrated offense.<\/p>\n

Western Michigan Broncos (3-4)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Broncos certainly aren\u2019t perfect but at least they\u2019re often fun to watch. Led by Alex Carder, Western Michigan quietly has the No. 15 passing offense in the country. The Broncos also average a healthy 31.6 points per game.<\/p>\n

They enter this week\u2019s home game having won two of three and having scored 45-plus points in each of those wins. Last week against Akron was perhaps Carder\u2019s best effort yet. He threw for 372 yards, completed 70.7 per cent of his passes and tallied five touchdown tosses.<\/p>\n

Western Michigan\u2019s defense against Notre dame two weeks ago showed that it can\u2019t really keep up against a big school; the Broncos allowed almost 450 yards of offense in a 44-20 loss.<\/p>\n

The pick: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Since each of these teams can move the ball pretty well \u2013 Northern Illinois on the ground and Western Michigan through the air \u2013 this game could actually a back-and-forth shootout (though I still think 54 points is too high of a total). In the end, I like Northern Illinois\u2019 superior defense to be the difference maker here. As good as Carder looked last week, he\u2019d thrown three touchdown passes versus seven picks in his four games prior. He could make some blunders this week. If Northern Illinois stakes out a lead, it can use Spann to chew up clock and close out the game.<\/p>\n
