2010 Breeders\u2019 Cup Race Preview- The Marathon<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The 2010 Breeders\u2019 Cup<\/strong><\/a> will be run on November 5th and 6th from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This year\u2019s Cup features 14 races over the two day period with 6 races scheduled for Friday and 8 races slated to run on Saturday. <\/p>\n

The Marathon- Friday November 5<\/strong>th<\/strong><\/sup> Post Time: 4:10 P.M. (EST)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Marathon is a Weight for Age race open to Thoroughbreds age 3 and up. It is contested on a dirt track at a distance of 1 \u00be\u00a0mile with a total prize purse of $500,000. There are four automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race.<\/p>\n

A.U Minor<\/strong><\/p>\n

In July of this year this horse registered an upset victory over heavily-favored Alcomo in the 1 \u00bd\u00a0mile Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park to earn an automatic \u201cWin and you\u2019re in\u201d bid to this year\u2019s Breeders\u2019 Cup Marathon. He went off at 14-1 odds and captured the victory by a neck. His last race was the Grade II Hawthorne Gold Cup on October 3rd<\/sup> where he finished third.<\/p>\n

Temple City<\/strong><\/p>\n

This horse\u2019s first stakes race victory was in the grade III $125,000 Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar which just so happened to be a Challenge Cup race, earning him an automatic bid for the Marathon. He went off as a 6-5 second favorite and took control of the race from the start, cruising to a 3 \u00bc lengths victory. He finished eighth in the Hawthorne Gold Cup his last time out.<\/p>\n

Alcomo<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2009 this horse won the Greenwood Cup and finished third in the Governor\u2019s Cup Stakes at Remington Park. In June of this year he won the grade II $200,000 Brooklyn Stakes at Belmont Park. He went off as an 8-5 favorite in this year\u2019s Greenwood and finished second, 3 \u00bc lengths ahead of Jade\u2019s Revenge. He has six points in the current Marathon standings.<\/p>\n

Awesome Gem<\/strong><\/p>\n

This horse is a longtime veteran of Breeders\u2019 Cup racing with a third place finish in the Classic in 2007, a sixth place finish in the Mile in 2008, and a seventh place finish in the Classic last year. So far in 2010 he won the grade I $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap in July and finished fifth in the grade I $250,000 Goodwood Stakes at Hollywood Park.<\/p>\n
