Houston vs Memphis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Houston<\/strong><\/p>\n

They may not be having the season they thought they hoped but Houston is alive in the conference race after last week\u2019s upset of SMU.\u00a0 There are a couple of teams nipping at their heels though so they can not afford a slip like the one they had at Rice a couple of weeks ago.\u00a0 This is their third week in a row on the road so they need to stay focused even though Memphis is a weak opponent.<\/p>\n

The Cougars upset SMU on the road last week but they didn\u2019t use their usual formula.\u00a0 Instead of passing for a zillion yards they emphasized the run game, racking up more than 160 yards on the ground and 4 TDs.\u00a0 They also were able to capitalize on defense forcing multiple turnovers.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think coach Sumlin is changing his approach but it is a sign of the strength of the program how they won last week.<\/p>\n

Houston has been the winner of the last two against the Tigers but their last trip to Memphis yielded only a 3 point victory.\u00a0 Also, Memphis is 5-2 against the spread against the Cougars so there is something about this game that inspires the Tigers.\u00a0 Houston shouldn\u2019t have a problem winning this one but we were saying the same thing two weeks ago when they rolled into Rice, but that was more of a rivalry game.<\/p>\n

Memphis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Memphis is one of the worst teams in the FBS.\u00a0 \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

They have only one win on the season against a Dasher-less MTSU squad and every loss but one has been by a minimum of 22 points.\u00a0 They are unlikely to win another game all season and lack much in the way of material to scare an opponent the calibre of Houston…but on any given Saturday, right?<\/p>\n

Memphis\u2019\u00a0problem is everything.\u00a0 They are one of the lowest scoring teams in the nation and nearly give up the most points.\u00a0 They neither run or pass well and don\u2019t even connect on their FG attempts with any degree of regularity.\u00a0 The only bright spot this year has been QB Ryan Williams.\u00a0 Just a freshman, he is taking his lumps like a man and might mature into a quality player down the road.<\/p>\n

In the past Memphis has had a strong running game which has kept the Cougars high powered offense off the field.\u00a0 That isn\u2019t the case this year which means that even though the spread is only 14 this one could be ugly.\u00a0 If Case Keenum were starting for the Cougars it might have been double what it is.\u00a0 In this one I think it won\u2019t matter and the Cougars will maul the Tigers.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>Houston rolls in this one as their passing game gets back on track.\u00a0 Memphis fans look forward to hoops season for some payback.<\/p>\n
