Clemson Tigers (4-3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve heard about the consequences of poking the bear. What about poking the Tiger?<\/p>\n

Clemson got a raw deal in its third, fourth and fifth games, losing three straight close ones against very tough opponents in Auburn, Miami (FL) and North Carolina. The Tigers were a better team than their 2-3 record showed at that moment and it\u2019s no surprise that they\u2019ve caught fire since then.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, the Tigers capitalized on turnovers and Andre Ellington ran a kick back for a touchdown en route to a 31-7 win over Maryland. Last week, it was the Ellington show again versus Georgia Tech. He rushed for a career-high 166 yards and two scores on 20 carries, leading Clemson to a 27-13 victory. Amazingly, Clemson\u2019s defense also held Josh Nesbitt to two rushing yards on 15 attempts. Not a misprint.<\/p>\n

However, the Tigers will be tested in a different way this week. Boston College is one of the ACC\u2019s top defensive teams and has by far the best run-stopping defense in the conference. If the Eagles shut down Ellington, they\u2019ll force the ball into Kyle Parker\u2019s hands. Is Parker ready for the task of leading Clemson downfield? He\u2019s been more of a caretaker this season, averaging just 162.7 passing yards per game and throwing for eight scores with four picks in seven contests. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n

Boston College Eagles (2-5)<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve established that the Eagles\u2019 calling card is their defense. So why the 2-5 record and 0-4 mark within the ACC? Well, scoring isn\u2019t Boston College\u2019s strong suit. The Eagles rank last in the ACC in total yards, points per game and rushing yards. Between quarterbacks Dave Shinskie, Mike Marscovetra and Chaste Rettig, they\u2019ve thrown for nine touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. They\u2019ve eaten 20 sacks in seven games. No signal caller on the team has more touchdown passes than picks.<\/p>\n

Boston College actually has a solid starting running back in Montel Harris, who averages 99. 1 rushing yards per game, but it\u2019s forced to abandon the run too often after falling behind in games.<\/p>\n

The pick:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though Boston College plays superior defense, that unit could get tired if it stays on the field all game. The Eagles can\u2019t score no matter who starts at quarterback (will it be Rettig again this week? Does it matter?). And, if Clemson could handle Nesbitt on the ground last week, it can handle Harris.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t expect a lot of scoring in this matchup. Boston College will stack the box against Ellington and Parker will probably hit some speed bumps when pressed into what could be his most extensive action this season. Still, with the Eagles not likely to score much, it\u2019s not like Parker will have to be all-world for Clemson to win.<\/p>\n
