SMU<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mustangs blew a huge opportunity last week against Houston.\u00a0 They had a chance to take command in the division and were playing against the Cougars third string QB but still lost by 25.\u00a0 Now they are tied and have to hope that the Cougars lose again while they remain perfect to make the Conference USA championship game.\u00a0 This was supposed to be the year the program took a step forward but that thought might have been premature.<\/p>\n

The primary reasons the Mustangs lost last week were turnovers and special teams.\u00a0 In fact they actually outgained the Cougars but coughing up the ball three times and allowing a 91 yard kickoff return to Tyron Carrier sealed their fate.\u00a0 Against explosive teams like Houston you can\u2019t fuel the fire by making mistakes. Even shorthanded the Cougars still know how to move the ball and SMU helped them out too much.<\/p>\n

SMU and Tulane haven\u2019t exactly had a lot of success on the field over the last decade. That is why it was surprising to see that Tulane has dominated the series winning seven of ten over that period.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Last year SMU won a game which was closer than expected but the momentum this year favours the Green Wave with SMU coming off of such a disappointing loss. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Tulane<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Green Wave, with three victories already, just might have a slim chance at a bowl game this year.\u00a0 When you look at their schedule I see a couple of more victories but they are going to need to pull at least one upset to reach the magic six victory mark to qualify.\u00a0 This week\u2019s home game against SMU might just be the best opportunity to make it happen.<\/p>\n

Tulane was impressive last week beating UTEP on the road by 10. Not only was it an upset victory but they did a great job containing the UTEP\u2019s passing game which bodes well as they face an ever harder SMU passing attack to stop.\u00a0 They outgained the Miners by almost 200 yards in the contest and winning the turnover battle easily 1-3.\u00a0 That combined with a great ground attack sealed one of the more impressive victories in Conference USA this season.<\/p>\n

Momentum may be on their side but it is still going to be a tough slog against SMU.\u00a0 Last week the defense held the Miners to only 24 points but they usually give up more than that.\u00a0 The key will be getting off to a good start.\u00a0 In all of their wins they were winning or tied at halftime.\u00a0 In all of their losses they were down at the half.\u00a0 This is not a good comeback team so they need to keep pace early or they get lost.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>I am not sure what to make of Tulane.\u00a0 Because of their geography they are able to get some really good athletes but their performance is really inconsistent.\u00a0 They should be able to keep this one close but it is a hard call.<\/p>\n
