Looks like I spoke too soon about the NFL escaping major injuries in Week 7. We lead off the day\u2019s news with major problems for two soon-to-be-former contenders.<\/p>\n
NFL news: Tony Romo breaks clavicle; Brett Favre has fractures in ankle<\/strong><\/p>\n The Dallas Cowboys can kiss their Super Bowl hopes goodbye this season. They were already on thin ice entering their clash with the New York Giants on Monday night and things went from bad to worse. With the Cowboys leading in the second quarter, Tony Romo took a big hit from Michael Boley and broke his clavicle.<\/p>\n The early prognosis states that the Cowboys\u2019 star quarterback will miss six to eight weeks but it\u2019s entirely possible that his season is over. Dallas falls to 1-5 and essentially needs to start looking ahead to 2011.<\/p>\n The Minnesota Vikings, now 2-5, are in a similar boat. Admittedly, I thought Brett Favre was hamming up his pain during Sunday\u2019s loss to Green Bay, conveniently limping every time he threw a pick. But it turns out he was legitimately banged up. An MRI on his left ankle yesterday revealed two different fractures. Though neither injury requires surgery, it\u2019s very possible that Favre\u2019s NFL record of 291 consecutive games started (315 including the playoffs) is about to end.<\/p>\n MLB news: Blue Jays hire John Farrell as manager, ManRam to follow? MLB could expand playoffs<\/strong><\/p>\n The Toronto Blue Jays\u2019 plans for 2011 involve plucking one \u2013 and perhaps two \u2013 former pieces of their division Rival Boston Red Sox. <\/p>\n The Jays have hired John Farrell as their new manager. He was Boston\u2019s pitching coach since 2007, mentoring young stars like Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, and he\u2019ll try to do the same with a young Toronto rotation that includes Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow and, eventually, Kyle Drabek.<\/p>\n Could Farrell\u2019s old Red Sox buddy, Manny Ramirez, follow him to Toronto? ManRam certainly wants to. He grew up a Blue Jays fan and has consistently mashed at the Rogers Center. But is he really a good fit for Toronto at age 39?<\/p>\n Even more good news for the Jays: it\u2019s possible that the MLB playoffs could expand in a couple of years. The MLB players\u2019 union is open to adding wild-card teams for 2012 \u2013 perhaps two more per league to bring the total to 12, which would mirror the NFL\u2019s format.<\/p>\n Is it possible that the Yankees\u2019 fans have ruined the team\u2019s chances at landing Cliff Lee this offseason? Reportedly, they yelled obscene things and threw beer at Lee\u2019s wife when she sat in the visiting family section at Yankee Stadium last week. Not the best idea if you want to woo a player, is it?<\/p>\n NHL news: Michael Nylander breaks his neck<\/strong><\/p>\n Scary stuff in the AHL this week. Playmaking center Michael Nylander, once a first-line NHL stalwart, was trying to fight his way back into the league through the AHL\u2019s Rochester Americans. However, he suffered a possible career-ending injury on Saturday against the Grand Rapids Griffins.<\/p>\n Nylander took an awkward hit from behind and fell into the boards, breaking his neck.
