South Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Gamecocks have a tricky schedule in 2010 and up until last week, optimism was high in Columbia, but losing to Kentucky last Saturday (even by a tight 31-28 margin) was certainly not a positive. They have a definite opportunity to right the ship in the Commodores.<\/p>\n

SC is a little shorthanded, as stud freshman RB Marcus Lattimore won\u2019t start this week, hobbled with an ankle injury. He could still get some touches, however, and a hobbled freshman Lattimore is still more effective than anything Vandy can roll out. Look for a lot of offense to come from veteran pivot Stephen Garcia and athletic marvel WR Alshon Jeffery. This might also be a good game to give Vandy some looks of freshman QB Connor Shaw. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The defense did not have its finest hour in Lexington last Saturday, but it still has the talent to stifle the home team this week and should rebound nicely.<\/p>\n

Vanderbilt<\/strong><\/p>\n

The namesake of this university was a monopolistic tycoon; too bad the school\u2019s football team doesn\u2019t follow suit. The Commodores had a see-saw last couple of weeks, crushing piddling Eastern Michigan 52-6 but losing to the Georgia Bulldogs last week 43-0. Earlier in the season, Vandy narrowly lost to Big Ten competitor Northwestern, but then got crushed the next week by LSU. Indeed, the 2010 season so far has been a head-scratcher.<\/p>\n

It would take a valiant effort from all the team\u2019s units to send the visiting Gamecocks away hobbled. The fact that Lattimore isn\u2019t 100% is good news \u2013 he\u2019s been shredding defenses. Still, even without flawless offensive balance, the Vandy secondary must worry about SC\u2019s aerial attack.<\/p>\n

Basically, everything about Vanderbilt\u2019s team has been pedestrian thus far, and the road doesn\u2019t get any easier next week with a trip to Fayetteville to play Ryan Mallett and the Razorbacks \u2013 or a visit from the Florida Gators the week after that. Clich\u00e9 though it is, Vandy must take this game one play at a time and try to force Carolina into structural mistakes it can capitalize on. Until last week, when SC lost to Kentucky, I would have said it is easier said than done, but therein lies the beauty of college football.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>Vandy might squeeze a touchdown or two out of junior QB Larry Smith, but SC has too many options for the Commodores to contain, especially if Lattimore comes into the game every once in a while for a different look.<\/p>\n
