Key players lost<\/strong> \u2013 Andres Nocioni, Spencer Hawes<\/p>\nThere\u2019s hope in Sacramento, and his name is Tyreke Evans.<\/p>\n
Since a great run through the early-to-mid 2000s, the Kings have bottomed out. They haven\u2019t appeared in the postseason in four years, and have combined to win just 42 games over the past two seasons. Then Evans came along and gave the team a fantastic building block.<\/p>\n
Evans, the fourth-overall pick in the 2009 draft, was sensational in his Rookie of the Year campaign. He became just the fourth ever rookie in NBA history to average at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game (joining Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James). One of Evans\u2019 few weaknesses last season was a long-range shot\u2014he hit just 25 percent of his threes in 2009-10. The rebuilding projected continued with the 2010 draft, where the Kings spent the fifth-overall pick on DeMarcus Cousins. The power forward adds some much-needed size to the lineup. Cousins wowed Sacramento with his athleticism, though the club should be wary of attitude problems. If he keeps his head screwed on, the former Kentucky star could blossom into a fantastic player.<\/p>\n
Cousins wasn\u2019t the only change up front. The Kings also used a second-rounder on Hassan Whiteside, a shot-blocking center, and shipped Spencer Hawes to Philadelphia for Samuel Dalembert.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the Kings might have to leave some of the toys in the garage for the time being. Dalembert was expected to start, but he\u2019ll miss a month after straining his groin. It\u2019s particularly frustrating since he hadn\u2019t missed a game in five years.<\/p>\n
The last new addition to the team is Antoine Wright, who should start at shooting guard. Wright was chosen 15th<\/sup> overall in the 2005 draft, but he\u2019s struggled in five seasons with the Nets and Mavericks. Sacramento shouldn\u2019t hold its breath for a sudden breakthrough.<\/p>\nThere are a few young pieces in place, but the Kings are a long, long way from respectability. They could be headed for the lottery once again.<\/p>\n
Surprising stat<\/strong>: Sacramento was 10th<\/sup> in rebounding last season.
\nStrengths<\/strong>: Evans and Cousins have the potential to form one of the league\u2019s best inside-outside duos.
\nWeaknesses<\/strong>: After those two, there\u2019s a considerable drop off in talent.
\nPlayoffs?<\/strong> Nope. Make it six years straight without a postseason date.
