Let\u2019s not pretend for a second that football is Duke\u2019s \u201cthing.\u201d The Blue Devils are flat-out bad and that\u2019s no surprise. The problems start with their quarterbacking. Sean Renfree brings a gunslinger mentality to the field \u2013 he threw 38 passes against Miami last week \u2013 but he\u2019s not very good. The Hurricanes picked him off five times in a 28-13 victory, pushing Renfree\u2019s season total to 14 interceptions. All of those picks have come during Duke\u2019s current five-game losing streak. It wouldn\u2019t be surprising to see Duke give freshman Brandon Connette some snaps this week; he ran for a score against Miami in Week 7.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s too bad Renfree makes so many poor decisions, as he has a solid group of receivers at his disposal. Conner Vernon, Donovan Varner and Austin Kelly make up three of the top six reception leaders in the ACC.<\/p>\n

As if Duke\u2019s offense, which ranks 10th<\/sup> in the ACC in scoring, wasn\u2019t in trouble enough, the Blue Devils have also surrendered the ACC\u2019s most points per game this season: 37.8. Against a Virginia Tech team averaging an ACC-best 36 points per contest, they\u2019ll be tested and then some.<\/p>\n

(23) Virginia Tech Hokies (5-2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a way, the further the Virginia Tech Hokies soar from their 0-2 start, the more maddening they are. These guys almost beat Boise State in Week one and have been outstanding from Week 3 on. If only the Boise State game went their way and they hadn\u2019t choked against James Madison, they could\u2019ve been BCS contenders by now. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n

Offense has fuelled Virginia Tech\u2019s five-game winning streak. During that stretch, they\u2019ve won by an average score of 41-21. Tyrod Taylor has taken the team on his shoulders. The shifty quarterback has nine touchdown passes and three rushing touchdowns this year.<\/p>\n

How dominant was Virginia Tech last week? It scored touchdowns on seven of its first eight possessions against Wake Forest and dropped 49 points in the first half. Wow.<\/p>\n

The pick:<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, check off the OVER for this game. Virginia Tech is scoring a ton and the trend shouldn\u2019t stop with another home game against a sieve-like defense this week. Also, the Hokies have allowed the second most passing yards in the ACC. Renfree faced the conference\u2019s top-ranked pass defense last week; in theory, he should have an easier time against Virginia Tech. This game should be very high-scoring.<\/p>\n

If Duke looks like it\u2019ll score a bit this week, can it stay within 26.5 points? I say yes. That\u2019s just a huge spread for Virginia Tech to cover. It could still blow Duke out \u2013 which it should \u2013 and not cover. I like Virginia Tech to win this week but, since Duke will pass on the Hokies, I like the Blue Devils to beat the spread.<\/p>\n
