Houston<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is an understatement to say that this year hasn\u2019t gone according to plan for the Cougars and that was before last week\u2019s unexpected loss at Rice.\u00a0 That loss prevented this week\u2019s matchup with SMU being for the position of top dog in the Conference USA West Division.\u00a0 Now they enter the contest a game back of SMU and another loss will likely kill any hope of a C-USA Championship.<\/p>\n

Even down to their third string QB the Cougars can still put points on the board.\u00a0 RB Bryce Beall is the best in the conference and finally up to speed after starting the season dinged up.\u00a0 Meanwhile, QB Dave Piland, a freshman, is averaging close to 300 yards per game through the air.\u00a0 The attack lacks the efficiency provided by injured QB Case Keenum but all the weapons are in place making Houston a very dangerous team, still.<\/p>\n

Houston has won the last four in the series all as heavy favourites.\u00a0 That isn\u2019t the case this year as SMU is a formidable opponent with its complete compliment of players.\u00a0 SMU has won only two of their last ten against Houston so you can bet they will be looking for some revenge against their in state conference rival.\u00a0 This year they should be able to get it. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

SMU<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mustangs may be perfect so far in Conference USA but they let a golden opportunity slip away last week against Navy.\u00a0 They were up by two touchdowns at the half but Navy kept after them eventually winning by a TD.\u00a0 Penalties and turnovers really hurt the Stangs while Navy didn\u2019t beat itself.\u00a0 Out of conference this year has been a disappointment.\u00a0 They are 1-3 but have been in the game in all three losses.<\/p>\n

One of the problems the Stangs have been having all season is getting into the end zone.\u00a0 They have one of the best aerial attacks in the nation led by Kyle Padron and rank 47th with over 400 yards of offense per game.\u00a0 But all that offense is only equaling 28ppg, good for just 60th in the country.\u00a0 When they are playing against quality teams they need to convert in the scoring zone.\u00a0 Their inefficiency is the sign of a maturing but not quite there team and it is on Padron to continue to improve.<\/p>\n

When Houston and SMU get together there are usually lots of points on the board.\u00a0 The 62.5 O\/U line is the lowest in four years and the Over has cashed in three of the last five seasons.\u00a0 With all of Houston\u2019s injuries this seems like SMU\u2019s year to capitalize but they are going to have to beat them on the field to do so.\u00a0 If they do they will have a commanding lead in the division can probably start thinking about the conference championship game.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>Houston is going through some hard times and going on the road to visit a rival is not the best opportunity to bust reverse their poor play.\u00a0 A very competitive game will end with the Mustangs on top.<\/p>\n
