Marshall<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Thundering Herd have gone from being a snakebitten team to just a bad one as the season has progressed.\u00a0 They have lost their last two games by 21 and 25 points respectively and are facing the hottest team in the conference in East Carolina this week.\u00a0 This is the first year for coach Doc Holliday and I am afraid the only hope for another victory is a home game against Memphis next month.<\/p>\n

It is easy to see why Marshall keeps losing.\u00a0 They are giving up gobs of points, 35+ to be exact, good for 107th in the nation.\u00a0 Pair that with an unimaginative offense devoid of any real playmakers and you have a recipe for a losing football club.\u00a0 The lone bright spot is rush linebacker Mario Harvey who with 4 sacks already is likely to eclipse last year\u2019s total of 7.\u00a0 Against ECU he should have lots of chances to rush the passer.<\/p>\n

Marshall has lost the last two to East Carolina but both were close low scoring games.\u00a0 It is going to be tough for the Thundering Herd to keep the points off the board this year now that East Carolina has gone to the spread offense that is so in fashion these days.\u00a0 Maybe a shootout is just what they need to open things up, if they can keep pace.<\/p>\n

East Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well the Pirates have done it again. It seems that every year they have a nice upset victory and this year it was dumping a surprisingly good NC State team last week.\u00a0 ECU always plays a tough schedule and their 4-2 record includes a perfect 3-0 record in the conference – their only two losses are to North Carolina and Virginia Tech.\u00a0 No shame there. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It is amazing how well the Pirates have taken to the spread offense considering the new coaches and personnel on the team.\u00a0 Led by former BC QB Dominique Davis they are ninth in the nation in passing offense and their ability to put points on the board now rivals conference mates like Houston, SMU and UTEP.\u00a0 While their offense has been off the charts good their D has been equally bad.\u00a0 Four times in six games they have given up more than 40 points – although they did win two of those.\u00a0 Facing Marshall their defense should get a bit of a reprieve.<\/p>\n

ECU needs to be careful they don\u2019t let up this week facing an inferior opponent like Marshall.\u00a0\u00a0 They know they have UCF on the schedule next week and the Knights are nipping at their heels in the division.\u00a0 That is a road game but the Pirates need to take care of business at home this week first.\u00a0 New coach Ruffin McNeil seems to have their attention so I think they will have the necessary focus.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>ECU shouldn\u2019t have any problems piling up yardage and points against the Thundering Herd defense.\u00a0 Their own will give up a few but not enough to be concerned.<\/p>\n
