Alabama<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Tide has systematically destroyed everyone in the FBS thus far \u2013 with emphasis put on a convincing 31-6 victory over superpower Florida last week. Despite being Tebow-less and suffering with some injuries, the Gators are still prodigiously talented and to be trounced so badly by the Tide was an echoing statement to the rest of the nation\u2019s elite.<\/p>\n

Alabama\u2019s defense is virtually impregnable, ranking tops in the country in points against despite losing a glut of talent to the pros in the off-season. Linebacker Dont\u2019a Hightower has emerged in 2010, leaving helmet paint and headaches for anyone who dares carry a pigskin. Hightower is merely one example from a very effective unit.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a lot to celebrate in Tuscaloosa these days, because the offense ain\u2019t too shabby either. Veteran pivot Greg McElroy commands the unit expertly and his job is made infinitely easier with the best running back duo in college football; both returning Heisman winner Mark Ingram and back-up Trent Richardson could play in the NFL right now. <\/p>\n

Rangy, athletic WR Julio Jones is a match-up scare for any defensive back in the game. <\/p>\n

If that weren\u2019t enough, the beefy offensive line is adept at blasting open lanes for Ingram and Richardson to gallop through. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s true the non-BCS titans like Boise and TCU have proven their worth, but it looks like anyone supplanting \u2019Bama in 2010 is a tall order, even for an upstart SEC program (playing well) like the Gamecocks. But the games aren\u2019t played on paper and that has proven especially true in the past couple of seasons in NCAA football.<\/p>\n

South Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u2019Cocks have to rock against the one visitor you don\u2019t want on the gridiron, but SC has some pieces to make this game interesting. Coach Steve Spurrier gets to deploy perhaps the best freshman RB in the country in Marcus Lattimore. The young man has shown power and speed in the first few weeks and has had some monster games.<\/p>\n

The Gamecocks lost a heartbreaker to Auburn last week, but SC made a game of it. Aside from allowing 19 points to lowly Furman the week before (in a win, mind you) South Carolina has played excellent. Pivot Stephen Garcia looks like a veteran that\u2019s finally figured it out, and athletic freshman Connor Shaw can spell him. Carolina would be wise to lean on Lattimore and use him to set up some high-percentage passes for Garcia.<\/p>\n

South Carolina has a defense characteristic of the SEC \u2013 speed and aggressiveness in droves. Stephon Gilmore and Chris Culliver stand out in the defensive secondary and if they can rattle McElroy, it would be huge in giving the Gamecocks a chance at home against bar-none the nation\u2019s best team. SC held a ranked Georgia team to six points in Week 2, but can they mimic that performance against beasts like McElroy, Jones, Ingram and Richardson?<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>There\u2019s no question that \u2019Bama is the superior team to their opponent, but that hasn\u2019t always mattered in the SEC. Still, the Tide offer a suffocating defense with a humming offense and it\u2019s unlikely Carolina will be able to solve one and stifle the other. This may not be a high scoring game, but anything other than a Tide road win would definitely come as a surprise.<\/p>\n
