Rice<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nothing too surprising about the Owls season so far.\u00a0 After putting a little bit of a scare into Texas in the opener and beating North Texas by a point they have lost three games in a row.\u00a0 The odds of them winning another game this year are pretty slim but as their 2-2-1 ATS record shows that doesn\u2019t mean they should be a complete after thought to the betting public.<\/p>\n

It was only a few years ago that Rice had one of the best offenses in the country, squeezing out an expected 10 win season.\u00a0 Now they are are a directionless squad that can neither score or stop anybody.\u00a0 The scoring part is tragic because conference USA is not exactly blessed with great defenses.\u00a0 The Owls average 21ppg but this is college not the NFL and that ranks 91st in the country.<\/p>\n

Amazingly Rice has won the last four against UTEP and covered a staggering seven in a row.\u00a0 UTEP is no powerhouse but it is interesting that they have not been able to stem the tide in this series of close games – the largest margin of victory was 8 points and only a point last year.\u00a0 You can bet that the Miners are looking to avenge that one. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

UTEP<\/strong><\/p>\n

They haven\u2019t beat anyone that is any good yet but 4-1 is 4-1 and the Miners are happy to be so close to being at the magical 6 win mark.\u00a0 You can make an argument that UTEP might have had the easiest non conference schedule in the land.\u00a0 After beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff they beat New Mexico and New Mexico State with a couple of conference games mixed in last month.\u00a0 Not very many teams would schedule both teams from the Land of Enchantment.<\/p>\n

The Miners are very happy to see the reemergence of QB Trevor Vittatoe.\u00a0 The senior starter had been regressing the last couple of seasons but it seems like he just might have been saving the best for last.\u00a0 His completion percentage could stand for improvement but 11 TDs with only 2 picks so far is a great ratio and has him among the national leaders.\u00a0 In this pass first offense he has been key so far.<\/p>\n

Especially because of the concerns around feature back Donald Buckram\u2019s health.\u00a0 Buckram is probable for Saturday and has only 16 touches and no TDs so far on the season.\u00a0 Last year he shredded Rice (147 yds, 3 TDs) in the loss but this year they may be able to break the streak without him.\u00a0 In his absence Joseph Banyard has been pretty good, ripping off 330+ yards at 5 yards a clip with 5 TDs but Buckram is this offenses greatest weapon.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>Despite the recent series history UTEP is the far better team this year and if Buckram plays should cover with ease.\u00a0 Even without him I like their chances.<\/p>\n
