It\u2019s not Florida State\u2019s 3-1 record that surprises bettors so far this season; it\u2019s how the Seminoles amassed it.<\/p>\n

Last season, FSU\u2019s defense was a laughing stock. It was expected to sputter again this season with Heisman Trophy hopeful Christian ponder needing to help the team win with offense first. Ponder has thrown for a respectable seven touchdowns but did his damage against Samford, Wake Forest and BYU. In FSU\u2019s one tough matchup so far this season, Ponder was terrible, going 11 of 28 for 113 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions against Oklahoma. The ground game has been more of a strength than the passing game; Ty Jones leads a rushing attack averaging 196.8 yards per contest. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n

But the key has actually been Florida State\u2019s defense thus far. The Seminoles lead the nation in sacks with 19 through four games. They had 27 all of last season. However, considering the \u201cD\u201d also got dominated in that Oklahoma game, has Florida State\u2019s success only come because of a weak schedule?<\/p>\n

Virginia (2-1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Especially at home, the Virginia Cavaliers won\u2019t be a pushover for Florida State. They showed they can put points on the board when they dropped 48 on poor Virginia Military Institute last week. Senior signalcaller Marc Verica has been sharp so far, tallying five touchdown passes versus one pick and averaging 232.3 passing yards per game.<\/p>\n

Virginia\u2019s defense has been even better, ranking seventh with just 12.3 points allowed per game. Richmond and Virginia Military were easy to hold down but allowing 17 points to USC on the road was a big accomplishment.<\/p>\n

The pick:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though Oklahoma lit them up, I still like what I\u2019ve seen from Florida State\u2019s defense overall this season. I think they\u2019ll make Marc Verica\u2019s life miserable. As solid as Verica has been, he wasn\u2019t so great against a legit defense like USC\u2019s earlier this season, throwing for 190 yards and a pick while completing 47.2 per cent of his passes.<\/p>\n

The Seminoles will know how to stall Virginia\u2019s offense and their rushing attack should do enough to put some points on the board. Expect FSU to grind out a win in what may be a surprisingly low-scoring affair. But it may not cover the spread depending on how the number shifts before game day.<\/p>\n
