Tulane Green Wave at Houston Cougars Matchup<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tulane<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Green Wave are 1-1 and coming off a bye.\u00a0 Their lone win came against lowly Southeastern Louisiana (they failed to cover) but Tulane did show up against Ole Miss losing by only a couple of TDs as 20 point dogs.\u00a0 As the failings of Ole Miss before and since have indicated that may have had more to do with the Rebels\u2019 ineptitude than Tulane\u2019s prowess…more likely the former than the latter.<\/p>\n

Tulane\u2019s gets lucky in that they do not have to face Case Keenum on Saturday…or at least as lucky as you can be in facing a team on the road that has beaten you seven times in a row, all by at least 21 points (HOU is 7-0 ATS as well).\u00a0 It may be nice facing a third string QB but Tulane needs to be concerned about their own play in the pivot.\u00a0 QB Ryan Griffin is completing a high percentage (67%) but is averaging less than 200 yards per game and hasn\u2019t thrown a TD pass in two games.\u00a0 If Tulane has to play catchup (almost assured) can he really lead them to victory?<\/p>\n

Tulane\u2019s best shot is to hope they can have success running the ball like UCLA did.\u00a0 RB Orleans Darkwa has been effective toting the rock but they need to give it to him more.\u00a0 He has only 25 carries in two games this year and he needs to be used to churn out yardage and work the clock to give Tulane even a hope of a chance.\u00a0 \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It is amazing how big the spread is this one considering Houston\u2019s injuries.\u00a0 It is either the ultimate in respect or disrespect.<\/p>\n

Houston<\/strong><\/p>\n

It says a lot about the Cougars that they can get smacked by UCLA, lose a Heisman hopeful QB (and his backup) and still be favoured by almost three touchdowns.\u00a0 It is amazing how a season can turn for better or worse in just a single game.\u00a0 I am not sure anyone has a book on third string QB Terrance Broadway but Houston has no other choice to continue with their pass happy spread attack.<\/p>\n

Lucky for Broadway none of the receivers got hurt.\u00a0 As a result he is at the controls of a very formidable attack but you have to wonder how the freshman will perform in his first college start.\u00a0 Also available is running back Bryce Beall.\u00a0 Beall is averaging almost 8 yards per carry and has 5 TDs in three games.\u00a0 Against a team like Tulane they can lean on Beall a little more than normal if they like.<\/p>\n

Against UCLA the Cougars were useless in run defense giving up 266 yards and over 5 yards per carry.\u00a0 This was against a team that had been struggling offensively all year in the Bruins.\u00a0 Everyone knows that the defense is the weak link on this team and UCLA had the talent to exploit it.\u00a0 Tulane is not nearly as talented as the Bruins but the formula for beating up the Cougars may have been exposed.\u00a0 Plus sticking to the ground game keeps their offense off the field which is no good for the Cougars.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>When I first saw this line I was in shock but as I broke down the game it seemed like it might not be so out of whack.\u00a0 Tulane stands little chance of slowing down the Cougar attack so as long as Broadway is OK the offense should roll.\u00a0 Still, that is a big unknown so I will take a pass on this one.\u00a0 There are better options out there.<\/p>\n
