Kansas<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Turner Gill era got off to a rocky start, losing a game to FCS North Dakota State.\u00a0 In that game they significantly outgained their foes but turned the ball over twice.\u00a0 Then in an amazing turnaround they followed up that stunning loss with a victory over a ranked Georgia Tech team despite surrendering more than 250 yards rushing to their triple option attack.\u00a0 The amazing turnaround from one week to the next bodes well for Gill at KU.\u00a0 Just like at Buffalo he is instilling a winning attitude in his team.<\/p>\n

I am still shocked that Kansas turned it around last week.\u00a0 This week they have their first road contest of the season against Southern Miss, who wants to show that their loss to South Carolina won\u2019t define their season.\u00a0 Even though Kansas won, and supposedly found their starting QB in the process, this offense is not very good.\u00a0 They only scored 3 points against North Dakota State and QB Jordan Webb threw for less than 200 yards against Georgia Tech.\u00a0 Hardly the kind of performance that cements a job even though he did include 3 TDs.<\/p>\n

With such huge differences from week to week it is hard to tell where this team will settle.\u00a0\u00a0 The last few seasons of Kansas football were about as god as it has been and they graduated a lot of talent after last season, including their all time leading passer and receiver.\u00a0 Last year the defense was not very good and they couldn\u2019t score enough points like they did the previous two seasons.\u00a0 After the first two games is is unclear how they expect to beat opponents.\u00a0 It\u2019s Gill\u2019s first year and it will likely take another or two for them to establish his style.<\/p>\n

Southern Miss<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Golden Eagles really disappointed me on the opening night of the season with their performance against South Carolina.\u00a0 They had a chance to announce to the rest of Conference USA that they were going to be a contender but instead it looks like another 7-6 seaon (they have had three in a row).\u00a0 To make that mark they have to avenge their loss at Kansas last season with a home victory on Friday night. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The key as always is getting the ball to mammoth receiver DeAndre Brown.\u00a0 The Gamecocks completely eliminated him from the game (he got his TD and 1\/2 his yards when they were down 30 points in Q4) but against Prairie View he had 5 catches for 100 yards and a TD.\u00a0 Granted there is a different in talent amongst the opposition but Southern Miss has to force the issue with Brown.\u00a0 He is their best playmaker by far and will have\u00a0 6 inches and 40 pounds on the corners who will try and defend him.\u00a0 That leaves plenty of margin for error for whichever QB is in the game.<\/p>\n

In last year\u2019s loss Kansas killed Southern Miss through the air.\u00a0 But that was with Todd Reesing at the controls and with two All Big 12 calibre receivers.\u00a0 This year they can focus on loading up on the run forcing newly appointed starter Jordan Webb to beat them.\u00a0 His weapons pale in comparison from year\u2019s past and he doesn\u2019t have all that much experience as the starter.\u00a0 On the road, at night they should be able to rattle him into some bad decisions.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>Southern Miss needs this one to have a successful season.\u00a0 They fought back from 2 TDs down last year only to lose but this year they might actually have the better team.\u00a0 As long as the spread stays where it is go with the Golden Eagles.<\/p>\n
