Both the Sun Devils and the Badgers remains undefeated after two non-conference wins to start the 2010 season. However, that\u2019s about all the two schools have in common, and it\u2019s not just a geographical difference either.<\/p>\n

Two things stood out Saturday night in the Sun Devils 41-20 win over FCS opponent Northern Arizona. One, the rushing game needs some work, and two, they need to cut back on costly penalties. Just seven days after racking up 242 yards in the ground in a win over Portland State, the Sun Devils turned in an anemic 56 on 29 carries against the Lumberjacks. The rushing struggles forced ASU to the air much earlier than expected as junior quarterback Steven Threet was forced to throw 52 times.<\/p>\n

Over in Madison, it was just the reverse as the Badgers needed a healthy dose of junior running back John Clay who led the way, rushing for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries as the No. 20 Badgers beat the San Jose State Spartans 27-13.<\/p>\n

However, the team\u2019s performance was far from overwhelmingly impressive.<\/p>\n

After starting the game with a 77 yard touchdown drive, the Badgers struggled to capitalize on numerous opportunities and excellent field position for the balance of the contest, allowing San Jose State to hang with them before ultimately put the game away with a fourth quarter touchdown run from Clay. The junior has now rushed for at least 100 yards in eight consecutive games and tallied his ninth career multi-touchdown game.<\/p>\n

However, Clay and the Badgers are yet to play a team up to their ranking, and will now get their first real test when they play an ASU team that has held its last two opponents to an average 14.5 points and 250.5 total offensive yards per game, including just 61 from the run. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Sun Devils have some serous demons they will need to fight off, and the first and foremost will be to cut down on the unnecessary amount of penalties that have been a problem for more than a year.<\/p>\n

Coming into Saturday\u2019s game, ASU are averaging 112 penalty yards per game, which ranks 118th out of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams. They piled up 13 penalties for 131 yards in their bout with NAU. Free real estate is something they cannot afford to do against a team like Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

Aside from the penalty problems, the \u2018Devils look poised to make a real run at a bowl appearance and a legitimate shot a\u00a0 top three conference finish. Their showdown with a BCS ranked team like the Badgers will be a good barometer early on to see just how good the team is.<\/p>\n

It will be a serious test for ASU\u2019s Threet who has enjoyed two quick victories against weaker FCS teams, bolstering his numbers. Let\u2019s don\u2019t forget he tossed two picks in his forced passing melee against the Lumberjacks.<\/p>\n

It will be important for both teams to find a way to quickly overcome their offensive shortcomings to present a more balanced attack.<\/p>\n

The Sun Devils will face a Badgers\u2019 defense that that ranks 22nd<\/sup> in the nation against the run and could use a little extra effort from running backs Cameron Marshall who was held to just 28 yards rushing against NAU, and Jamal Miles who had 139 all-purpose yards, including 105 on punt returns.<\/p>\n

Wisconsin\u2019s challenge will be to tighten up their 47th<\/sup> ranked pass defense while at the same time allowing more opportunity for senior quarterback Scott Tolzien to improve their air assault.<\/p>\n

While I think the Badgers will likely walk away the SU win in this one, I do think it will be closer than the odds makers are predicting.<\/p>\n
