In a battle in the old west on Saturday evening the New Mexico Lobos host the Texas Tech Red Raiders. This is a non-conference game and it could be a whopper since both teams combined for over 100 points last week. Oh, wait a minute, Texas Tech and New Mexico\u2019s opponent combined for over 100 points, as the Lobos were more than embarrassed and look to save a little face for the 2010 season at home in this game.<\/p>\n

Tech got past a stiff test against a legit SMU team last week and they look to get off to a 2-0 start winning this game, as next week they likely have their biggest game of the season facing 5th<\/sup> ranked Texas.<\/p>\n

New Mexico is behind the 8-ball already, as they not only got schooled last week, but they face a dynamic offense of the Red Raiders in this game and then face 20th<\/sup> ranked Utah next week before starting conference play.<\/p>\n

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. New Mexico Lobos Preview <\/strong><\/p>\n

We all know Tech has a great offense with the pass-first system they use and they looked good in last week\u2019s win beating a SMU team 35-27 that can also light up the scoreboard. New Mexico? Well, they faced Oregon in the Great Northwest and were humbled losing 72-0. The Red Raiders did not cover the spread and are 0-1 heading into this game and do I even need say that New Mexico didn\u2019t cover? Yeah, they didn\u2019t so they are 0-1 ATS. <\/p>\n

Tech had 431 yards of offense in their win over SMU and it was, pretty much, all in the air, as they had 359 passing yards and only 72 rushing yards. QB Taylor Potts is the next big Red Raiders\u2019 system QB and he looked great in the SMU win with 359 passing yards and 4 TD with 0 INT. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Potts will be playing behind a young offensive line, but how good do they need to be against a New Mexico defense that gave up 72 points last week?<\/p>\n

The Red Raiders have quite a few legit options for Potts to toss to, but his main 2 targets are the WR\u2019s of Lyle Leong (11 rec 142 yards 3 TD last week) and Detron Lewis (6 rec 79 yards 1 TD last week). Potts and the WR corps of the Red Raiders may have a big game since New Mexico gave up 351 passing yards to Oregon last week.<\/p>\n

Oh, poor Lobos, as last week they gave up 720 yards and only picked up 107 yards with 82 passing yards and a grand total of 25 rushing yards. QB B.R. Holbrook is the starter, but after last week\u2019s debacle he may be benched. At least he, or whoever is under center for the Lobos, will be facing a Tech defense that has had their issues and is mediocre at best.<\/p>\n

The New Mexico offensive line lacks size and they will need to keep the Red Raiders\u2019 defense from getting to the QB.<\/p>\n

Lobos\u2019 RB Demond Dennis was though to be the strength of the New Mexico offense, as the one-time Georgia Tech recruit led the Lobos last year in rushing even though he missed a couple of games. However, last week he only had 10 yards on 11 carries for a sweet average of 0.9 yards per carry. Oregon has a much better defense than Texas Tech, so he will likely have a better game.<\/p>\n

For the Lobos to have any chance of winning this game Dennis will have to run the ball, which will help New Mexico control the clock and keep the dynamic offense of the Red Raiders on the sidelines.<\/p>\n
