Enjoy!

The NFL season starts today – so it’s only fitting that we lead off the daily news with football.

NFL news:Tom Brady unhurt in car crash Tom Brady literally started his 2010 season with a bang today when he was involved in a car accident this morning. The wreck happened in downtown Boston and left the Patriots quarterback “shaken” but not injured. He went to the team facilities at Gillette Stadium instead of the hospital.

Reportedly, Brady wasn’t at fault in the accident. Another driver ran a red light in a minivan and T-boned Brady’s car.

Quick injury update: with Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch still both on the mend, C.J. Spiller will start at running back for Buffalo this Sunday against Miami; after weeks of rumors about his meniscus, Maurice-Jones Drew doesn’t even appear on Jacksonville’s injury report this week; Michael Bush’s thumb may not keep him out of Sunday’s game against Tennessee after all; Chris “Beanie” Wells has a bruised knee but looks like he’ll suit up against the Rams this weekend.

NCAA football news: Mark Ingram likely out again this week; A.J. Green suspended four games

Though the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide have a marquee matchup against No. 18 Penn State this week, they may do battle without their star running back for the second straight game. Mark Ingram, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, has not yet returned to practice. Coach Nick Saban wouldn’t totally rule him out, explaining that Ingram is one of the rare players who can jump into game action without practicing. But all indications are that Ingram’s knee isn’t quite healed enough to let him play.

No. 22 Georgia suffered a big blow to its offense yesterday. A.J. Green, viewed by many as a budding NFL-caliber talent at wide receiver, was suspended four games by the NCAA. Green sold a jersey from last year’s Independence Bowl for $1,000 to someone who qualifies as an agent. That’s a big no-no under league rules.

Basketball news: Coach K, Russian coach Blatt feud at World Championships; new Melo rumors

The Cold War comparisons have already started flying; Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski and Russian coach David Blatt are firing verbal jabs back and forth at the World Basketball Championships.

The feud stems from the fact that Blatt is actually an American Citizen. Coach K implied that David Blatt didn’t respect his country after Blatt suggested the U.S. wasn’t robbed of a gold medal at the 1972 Olympics. Blatt reversed the argument by suggesting that Coach K may be the unpatriotic one if he’s squashing someone’s freedom of speech.

The latest Carmelo Anthony rumor: he prefers a trade to the Chicago Bulls or New York Knicks. The Bulls seem like a viable trading partner given all the young assets they have. But the Nuggets could still trade him elsewhere; as we reported a few weeks ago, the Clippers, Nets and Rockets are all still interested.

Comments are welcome below!

Sports water cooler headlines and sports gossip for Thursday September 9th, 2010.
