The\u00a0Syracuse Orange will head west to face off against the Washington Huskies on Saturday, September 11th<\/sup> at 7 pm EST at Husky Stadium in Seattle, WA.<\/p>\n

The teams last met in 2007, with Washington getting the win 42-12.<\/p>\n

The Orange spent most of the 2009 season retooling and finished the season going 4-8, including 1-6 in the conference. They are hoping that the sacrifices made will pay off in 2010 with a delicate mix of veterans and new recruits, all stirred into an offense that boasts a more pass oriented approach.<\/p>\n

So far so good, as the Orange beat Akron 29-3 on Saturday, to win its first home opener since 2003.<\/p>\n

The charge was led as planned by sophomore QB Ryan Nassib as he added two touchdowns on 229 yards, going 17-for-27. The youngster stepped up from his backup role to lead the air assault connecting with Aaron Weaver for a 23-yard score on the game\u2019s first series and then finding Van Chew for a 26-yard touchdown reception in the closing seconds of the first half.<\/p>\n

Syracuse was equally effective on the ground, as senior running back Delone Carter registered a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and rushed for 91 yards against Akron. Carter rushed for over 1,000 yards with 11 touchdowns in 2009 and will continue to be one of the Orange\u2019s main offensive threats for opposing defensive front fours.<\/p>\n

One area of concern for the Orange has to be the inexperience on the offensive line. Redshirt Justin Pugh will be given a starter role along with senior Ryan Bartholomew who will looked upon to provide some veteran leadership at center. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The defense will rely on its ability to apply pressure against the pass and it appeared linebackers Derrell Smith and Doug Hogue provided just that against Akron.<\/p>\n

This team is not a high scoring offense, and will rely on the defense to keep its games close, but will face a much tougher challenge in Seattle.<\/p>\n

Despite coming off a disappointing 23-17 loss to BYU, the Huskies are full of promise to contend for a PAC-10 crown in 2010.<\/p>\n

A lot of that hope centers around quarterback Jake Locker who passed for 266 yards, but missed passes on two fourth-down conversion attempts in the final quarter that could have put the Huskies ahead after allowing the Cougars to take the lead late in the third.<\/p>\n

Washington will try and put the loss behind them looking ahead to their outing against the Orange, a team Locker has had success against, winning 42-12 at Syracuse in his first career start as a redshirt freshman in 2007.<\/p>\n

They have infused a lot of talent into the roster in a short time. Locker for one is bursting with skills, but no team can rely on just one man, and the offensive line hasn\u2019t helped him much.<\/p>\n

Like the Orange the Huskies have to be concerned about an O-line that offered up there quarterback 21 times a season ago and allowed Locker to be sacked once in their loss to the Cougars.<\/p>\n

Running back Chris Polk, who became the first Husky freshman to surpass 1,000 yards rushing, is likely to run circles around a mediocre Syracuse rush defense that allowed 166 yards on the ground against Akron.\u00a0 Polk ripped off 92 yards on 16 carries for the Huskies in Saturday\u2019s loss to BYU and is likely to break the century mark versus the Orange.<\/p>\n

Locker has one of the best receiving group in the conference. Junior Jermaine Kearse,\u00a0Devin Aguilar, and James Johnson combined for over 1,800 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, but where not a factor in Saturday\u2019s contest, with Kearse netting the solitary touchdown reception midway through the first quarter.<\/p>\n

The Huskies defense did its job for the most part against BYU\u2019s run, but a questionable secondary gave up 408 yards through the air including the go-ahead score on a 48-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter.<\/p>\n

At -13 I\u2019m not sure I\u2019m sold on Washington\u2019s ability to cover the spread considering the final result against BYU. However, I think the defense can apply enough pressure on Syracuse\u2019s Nassib forcing him to make hurried decisions resulting in key turnovers and the win.<\/p>\n
