Week One: Kentucky vs. Louisville Preview\/Pick<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Kentucky<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Joker Phillips era will begin in 2010, and what better way to get it started than to start off with an in-state rival like the Cardinals of Louisville? Rich Brooks did a very good job turning this Kentucky Wildcats football program into a respectable program that could get to bowl games fairly consistently. It is now up to Joker Phillips to help them reach that next step, which is beating the best teams in the SEC. <\/p>\n

In the last four years, Kentucky is 0-12 against Tennessee, Florida, and South Carolina. This year has a built of a rebuilding feel to it, but there is still plenty of talent to be competitive.<\/p>\n

Mike Hartline won the starting quarterback job for the Wildcats, so it will be his offense to lead. Hartline is a gritty player who gives it his all every single play, but he isn\u2019t a prolific passer or a great runner. Also concerning for Kentucky is the fact that four of their five offensive linemen from last year are gone; meaning protecting the quarterback could be a real issue. <\/p>\n

The running back spot is very solid, with Derrick Locke possessing a great ability to both run the ball effectively and catch it out of the backfield. Randall Cobb is a star on the outside and he will help the Wildcats run the \u201cWildcat package\u201d some in 2010.<\/p>\n

On defense there are quite a few questions for the Wildcats. The team is athletic and quick, but there is definitely a lack of experience here. The team was last in the SEC in sacks last year, and I don\u2019t see that number improving too much in 2010. The secondary is decent, but I expect the front four to be a real problem for this team. <\/strong><\/span>\"College<\/a><\/p>\n

Louisville<\/strong><\/p>\n

Charlie Strong, former Florida defensive coordinator, is the new coach at Louisville and he gets to take on the Wildcats of Kentucky in his first game at the helm. Steve Kragthorpe wore out his welcome after underperforming with some pretty solid talent for three years. <\/p>\n

Now, Strong must get started with far less than stellar talent. It will be a process that takes several years for this team.<\/p>\n

The good news for the Cardinals is they do have a very talented running back in Victor Anderson. He had injuries last year, but he appears ready to go again in 2010. The huge question mark comes when trying to determine who will quarterback this team. Adam Froman looks like he\u2019ll get the first shot at the job, but this could be a controversy all year long. <\/p>\n

The Cardinals simply don\u2019t have a guy on their team who appears ready to lead the offense.<\/p>\n

The defense has some talent, but they aren\u2019t deep at all compared to most of the schools in the Big East. The defensive line is undersized and poor against the run. Louisville will likely have trouble stopping Kentucky, or anyone for that matter, from running the football this year. The secondary has the potential to be good. Johnny Patrick is a great cover corner and helps out very well in the rushing defense as well. <\/p>\n

The defense will improve over time with a coach like Charlie Strong, but it\u2019s asking too much to expect a lot out of this group.<\/p>\n

The Pick:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Honestly, both of these teams have quite a bit of work to do. Having said that, I really think Kentucky has more depth and more talent at the skill positions. Mike Hartline isn\u2019t great, but he gives the Wildcats the upper hand in the quarterback matchup against Louisville. I think the Wildcats have a few too many play makers. Take Kentucky -3 here.<\/p>\n
