In Paul Wulff\u2019s third season, he fields a deeper and stronger team than in the past, yet there is still a noticeable gap between Washington State and the rest of the conference.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not like there\u2019s no reason for optimism \u2013 the Cougars have a strong D-line and a QB with some serious potential in sophomore Jeff Tuel \u2013 but Cougars fans shouldn\u2019t be getting their hopes up this season.<\/p>\n Team Strengths:<\/strong><\/p>\n Sophomore DE Travis Long and strong JUCO transfer DT Brandon Rankin comprise two pieces of an effective, much-improved defensive line. After years of dreadful quarterback play, Tuel burned his redshirt last season and threw for 354 yards versus California. <\/p>\n [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n He is 6\u201d3, 211 lbs and a strong passer; before his tenure at WSU is done he will remind fans of Cougars legend Drew Bledsoe. Senior RT Micah Hannam is also a player.<\/p>\n The senior kicker\/punter tandem of Nico Grasu and Reid Forrest leave the special teams in experienced, capable hands (or feet, more accurately).<\/p>\n Team Weaknesses: <\/strong><\/p>\n Tuel will be much improved, but no dynamic offensive player emerged in 2009. Despite the many returning starters this season, this doesn\u2019t bode well for the 2010 offense. Theoretically, senior RB James Montgomery should be a threat (he was a highly-touted prospect that initially signed with California) but he was so-so in limited opportunities last year. <\/p>\n The receivers are underwhelming and the defensive secondary isn\u2019t striking fear into any quarterbacks\u2019 hearts.<\/p>\n With the exception of junior Will linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis, the LB unit is entirely unproven.<\/p>\n 2010-2011 WSU Football Prediction: 3-9<\/strong><\/p>\n The general lack of talent on the Cougars\u2019 roster is exacerbated by the fact that the rest of the Pac-10 is so remarkably balanced and threatening.
