WAC Conference Football Previews: Utah St. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Aggies of Utah State are known as a basketball school only, but Gary Anderson is doing his best to try to change that. The Aggies football squad has now had 13 straight losing seasons. In 2009, the team\u2019s offense showed a great deal of improvement, and expectations are slowly starting to rise among the Aggies fan base. <\/p>\n

The biggest reason for optimism is quarterback Diondre Borel. Borel is one of the best quarterbacks you\u2019ve probably never heard of, and he leads this offense very efficiently.<\/p>\n

Coach Anderson is looking for improvement from his defense. Anderson came into this job as a coach widely considered to be a defensive guru. The defense let them down last year, but can they improve this year? <\/p>\n

That will likely be the difference between either another 4-8 type of season or six wins or more. <\/p>\n

Team Strengths:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diondre Borel is definitely a huge strength for this team. Borel is a dual-threat quarterback that can hurt you in many ways, and he also takes good care of the football. He threw just four interceptions last year, compared to 17 touchdown passes. <\/p>\n

The wide receivers are experienced and ready to provide Borel with plenty of options on the outside. There are five receivers returning that caught at least 20 passes last year. <\/p>\n

\"Sports<\/p>\n

On the ground, he is one of the most dangerous rushing quarterbacks in the country.<\/p>\n

The linebackers are extremely solid. Bobby Wagner, Kyle Gallagher, and Junior Keiaho will probably be one of the best linebacker units in the WAC this season. There is plenty of speed here, and the leadership of some veterans is helpful here too.<\/p>\n

Team Weaknesses: <\/strong><\/p>\n

The defensive line is the huge weakness for this defense. This team has been unable to generate any pressure at all on the quarterback, which hurts the team immensely. Utah State was 100th in the nation in sacks last year and none of their returning defensive linemen recorded a sack in 2009.<\/p>\n

Robert Turbin tore his ACL in January and that makes the running back position a question mark for the Aggies. It isn\u2019t that they don\u2019t have anyone who can play here, but missing Turbin is a huge loss for this team. If he is unable to play at all, they\u2019ll miss their second play maker.<\/p>\n

The secondary is a very big area of concern for Utah State. The cornerbacks and safeties often simply appear overmatched. They are slow to react to the ball in the air and the lack of heat on the quarterback only exacerbates their issues. <\/p>\n

Utah State 2010-2011 Football Predictions: <\/strong>5-7<\/p>\n

I think this Utah State program has come quite a ways in the last couple of years. Borel is a great play maker who is a lot of fun to watch. <\/p>\n

The defense will likely be terrible against the pass, which should keep them from making as big of a jump as they could. The schedule isn\u2019t an easy one at all, as they play their toughest opponents on the road. <\/p>\n

Keep an eye on the home game on November 20th against Idaho, since that is a team they will likely be battling for position. I think the Aggies fall just a little short of .500 in 2010.<\/p>\n
