Conference USA Football Previews: Memphis <\/strong><\/p>\n

Tommy West was fired at the end of last season and this is now Larry Porter\u2019s team. Porter will absolutely have his work cut out for him to show much improvement right away, as this Memphis squad simply has all kinds of holes that need filled. Most Tigers fans know that Porter won\u2019t be able to work a miracle with this program right away, but they will be looking for signs of improvement in the fundamental aspects of the game.<\/p>\n

There is talent littered around certain parts of the team for the Tigers, but there are glaring weaknesses that leave far more questions than answers about this team. Porter will need to get his players to buy into the system and look for improvement as the year progresses.<\/p>\n

Team Strengths:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The defensive line looks like it should be pretty solid in 2010. The tackles in the middle are big and should clog up the running lanes, and Winston Bowens should lead an improved pass rush.<\/p>\n

If Lance Ball is available this year, he will be a huge strength for the Tigers in the backfield. Ball broke his leg in the spring and is questionable for this year.<\/p>\n

The offensive line is a veteran group that should do a good job in both run and pass blocking. Expect this group to be the main strength of the offense.<\/p>\n

Team Weaknesses: <\/strong><\/p>\n

The quarterback position is a huge question mark for Memphis. Cannon Smith, Tyler Bass, and Ryan Williams are all in the mix for the position and it is unknown who will start the season under center. This could a continual controversy, which is never good, and none of these quarterbacks look to be very productive this season.<\/p>\n

As if the quarterback question mark isn\u2019t enough, there isn\u2019t a single receiver returning who had more than 20 catches a year ago. This is a young group that could struggle, especially at the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n

The secondary of the Tigers is a huge weak spot. Marcus Ball is a solid free safety, but other than that Memphis will have a ton of unproven players out on the field in the secondary. The last few games of 2009 saw Conference USA teams pile up the passing yards on this defense. <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be surprised if it happens in 2010 as well.<\/p>\n

Memphis 2010-2011 Football Predictions: <\/strong>2-10<\/p>\n

I actually think the Tigers will be a little better than they were in 2010, but this schedule is extremely difficult. They must play Mississippi State, Louisville, and Tennessee in the out of conference slate. They\u2019ll get Houston and Southern Miss at home inside the league, but those two teams should be far too talented for Memphis this year. <\/p>\n

Memphis has some pieces to the puzzle, but they have a long way to go. Expect another long year for the Tigers.<\/p>\n

Trevor Vittatoe had a down year in 2009 after two impressive years in 2007 and 2008. Vitatoe has all the tools to be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference. I expect him to bounce back and have a big year in 2010.<\/p>\n
