Conference USA Football Previews: SMU <\/strong><\/p>\n

\n2009 Record: <\/strong>8-5<\/p>\n

A couple of years ago SMU made a big move and hired June Jones as their head coach. It was a big statement that the school was committed to getting their football program back on the map. <\/p>\n

In 2008, the team finished 1-11 and was miserable as per the normal. In 2009, the team had a stunning turnaround, winning 8 games and defeating Nevada in their first bowl game in 25 years.<\/p>\n

Clearly, June Jones has got this program heading in the right direction in a hurry. The Mustangs have gone from a bottom feeder to a real contender in the conference. It now seems like it is a foregone conclusion that SMU will win the Conference USA championship soon if Jones stays on board, but just how soon could that be? This team certainly isn\u2019t the most talented in the league, but they will once again be a quality team. <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t expect anyone to overlook SMU in 2010 as they did last season. <\/p>\n

Team Strengths:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The team is strong at the defensive end position. Taylor Thompson is the best of the group, but Marquis Frazier is extremely talented as well. Also, keep an eye on their third defensive end, Mangus Hunt, who almost broke the record for blocked kicks in 2009. <\/p>\n

This is a supremely talented unit. \"Sports<\/p>\n

The offense will have a quality signal caller in Kyle Padron. Padron took to June Jones system right away in 2009, and I fully expect the youngster to continue to improve in the offense as this season progresses.<\/p>\n

The offensive line is a real area of strength for SMU. Both tackles are terrific at pass blocking, which is exactly what Jones is looking for from them. The middle of the line is solid as well, and Padron shouldn\u2019t have many opponents in the backfield this season.<\/p>\n

Team Weaknesses:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The team has a big question mark at running back. It is unknown who will get most of the carries at this point. A couple freshmen appear ready to compete for the job right from the beginning, but the rushing attack could be weak at SMU in 2010.<\/p>\n

The secondary isn\u2019t as experienced as the rest of the defense, and they could get lit up by the best passing teams in the league. This could be a real problem since the conference is filled with teams who love to air it out. <\/p>\n

2010-2011 SMU Mustangs Football Predictions: <\/strong>8-5<\/p>\n

Normally, I would probably predict a team like this to finish at about .500, but I\u2019m willing to give this team the benefit of the doubt because of how well Jones has done in his first two years. <\/p>\n

Even without a real running threat, the passing attack should be plenty strong enough to carry them against most of their opponents this year. The home game against Houston on October 23rd is the game to watch inside the conference this year. <\/p>\n

SMU also hosts TCU on September 24th, which will give a quick test as to how good this team can be in 2010. I expect another bowl berth and continued progress at SMU.<\/p>\n
