No doubt the fan base would gladly sign on for a repeat of that magical 7-9 2007 season, considering that the team has had only two wins in 32 games since then.<\/p>\n There is hope this time around. All the players who will be touching the ball after the snap have the ability to make plays. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n Quarterback Matthew Stafford showed as a rookie last season that he has the potential to be the real deal, and he should both increase his TD pass total (13) and reduce his interception total (20) from last season. He has two solid running backs (Kevin Smith and Jahvid Best) to hand off to, and there may be only two or three better wideouts in the league than Calvin Johnson. <\/p>\n The Lions also have high hopes that blocking tight end Brandon Pettigrew, also taken in the first round, can help them move the chains.<\/p>\n They had better be able to orchestrate some long drives, because when the defense gets on the field, there are problems. The defensive front couldn\u2019t collapse the pocket more than a few times a game last season, and the secondary just wasn\u2019t good enough (actually, it wasn\u2019t good at all) to make up for it. As a result, Detroit gave up more yards and more points than any team in the league in 2009.<\/p>\n All the angst created by the less-than-mediocre front four last season resulted in the drafting of defensive tackle\/beast Ndamukong Suh, and the Lions also snagged veteran Corey Williams and Kyle Vanden Bosch to a complete a near 100-percent turnover. The linebackers are a nondescript group, and the secondary isn\u2019t a lot better, though second-year safety Louis Delmas has promise.<\/p>\n If coach Jim Schwartz hopes to get the Lions out of the gutter in the NFC North, he has to figure out a way to be competitive in a division in which the Lions have lost 14 straight games. <\/p>\n They aren\u2019t going to fly past Green Bay or Minnesota any time soon, and the Bears are primed for a step up.<\/p>\n THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW<\/strong> \u2013 If anything, the Lions should be able to move the ball.
