The 2005 season – which culminated in a Super Bowl XL loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers – was so good for Seattle because of lineman such as Sean Locklear, Robbie Tobeck, Walter Jones, and Steve Hutchinson.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE TOP CAPPERS FOR NFL FOOTBALL BETTING THIS SEASON —–>

The team had the anchors up front who make a quarterback stay up on his own two feet, and enable a running back to look good as he busts through holes in a defensive front.

Then the Seahawks decided not to keep Hutchinson, and as a result, the Minnesota Vikings (who now have Hutchinson’s services) have been a consistent playoff team.

The Seahawks?

Well, they’re now getting accustomed to seasons like their dreary march through 2009. Seattle went 5-11 in a season so odious that head coach Jim Mora, Jr. – installed in a succession plan after Mike Holmgren retired – was fired by team brass after just one season on the sidelines in the Pacific Northwest.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

It really wasn’t Mora’s fault; it was the fault of an organization whose management decided, after Super Bowl XL, that Walter Jones didn’t need much help along the offensive line. Tobeck retired, Hutchinson went off to Minnesota, Locklear dropped away, and as a result, the Seahawks’ 2009 offensive line had no punch or power.

Opposing defensive front tossed aside the Seahawks’ not-so-big uglies in the trenches, and that’s why quarterback Matt Hasselbeck – who is really good when healthy and surrounded by solid talent – suffered a rib injury in week two of the season. Hasselbeck spent the rest of 2009 battling his physical limitations, and without a line good enough to blow up holes for the rushing attack, Seattle had no offense whatsoever.

This team was repeatedly shut down and rarely scored anything beyond 24 points in a single game. Interestingly enough, the 5-11 Seahawks won twice against 1-15 St. Louis, once against Detroit, and once against lowly Jacksonville.

Their one quality win came in a 20-17 decision over San Francisco. Yes, that’s what happens when an offensive line is poor.

In 2010, the Seahawks produced a great draft. They started with offensive tackle Russell Okung, a gifted prospect who could make an immediate impact on the offensive line. If Seattle’s line can make real improvements, the addition of playmaking receiver Golden Tate – in another good draft pick – might make the Seahawks somewhat respectable on the offensive side of the ball.

New head coach Pete Carroll has his work cut out for him, but in a weak division, an 8-8 or 9-7 record is entirely reachable; what’s more, it could well win a division in which the favorite is a San Francisco team that still stands on shaky ground and has not proven it can attain the next level.

Hasselbeck has to be protected at all costs; if he avoids reckless decision making and gets even a modest amount of help from both his linemen and his receivers, the Seahawks could remain competitive well into the fourth quarter of each and every game they play.

The NFC West won’t be good in 2010, but it does figure to be competitive and hard-fought; if Seattle can win fourth quarters in its division, it could steal the West championship and return to the playoffs.

Seahawks 2010 Outlook

Realistically, the offensive line, the running game and Carroll are wild cards that we can’t trust quite yet.

Seahawks 2010 Futures

Super Bowl Odds: +6550
Conference Odds: +2250
NFC West Odds: +400

2010 Seahawks Predictions

Place they’ll finish in NFC West: 2nd
Place they’ll finish in NFC Conference: 12th
Over/Under Season Wins Prediction: UNDER 7.5 Wins

***** Exclusive 100% Sportsbook Bonus!
