Skip Holtz has moved on and now it is time for the Ruffin McNeill era to begin. East Carolina has won the Conference USA title two years straight, but this year\u2019s team will take on a much different look. While both the 2008 and 2009 versions were full of veterans, this team will center around youngsters. <\/p>\n

Gone are the veterans that helped them win two straight titles and gone is the coach that built the team as well.<\/p>\n

Ruffin McNeill doesn\u2019t exactly have an empty cupboard as enters East Carolina, but the level of talent is definitely not where it was in the last two years. <\/p>\n

The loss of Patrick Pinkney is a huge one and this team will have to find a quarterback that will give them a chance to win against quality teams.<\/p>\n

Team Strengths:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wide receivers are extremely talented, and they do have some experience. Dwayne Harris is the team\u2019s best overall player and he has the potential to really shine in this new passing attack that will be implemented under McNeill. Look for more of a Texas Tech look for the Pirates this year, with short and efficient passes being the goal.<\/p>\n

\"Sports<\/a><\/p>\n

The offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the conference last year. Three starters are back and they should be solid once again. The adjustment will be the new system, but these guys are good enough that they should do well once again in 2010.<\/p>\n

The defensive secondary has the potential to be quite good. The safeties are new, but talented. Cornerbacks Emanuel Davis and Travis Simmons should make life tough on the opposition\u2019s receivers.<\/p>\n

Team Weaknesses:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The entire front seven of the defense is gone, leaving a massive hole in the defense. They will struggle to plug seven players into seven crucial spots and not suffer a large drop in production. I would expect the run defense to drop off significantly this year.<\/p>\n

The quarterback situation is a real concern. None of the quarterbacks have much experience at all, especially in this system. Can they find someone who can take good care of the football in such a pass happy offense? It\u2019s a huge question mark for this team.<\/p>\n

The running back situation isn\u2019t a whole lot better for East Carolina. Jonathan Williams will probably get most of the carries, but he has had injury trouble. <\/p>\n

If he can\u2019t get the job done, the Pirates will probably play some freshman, because depth is an issue here. <\/p>\n

2010-2011 East Carolina Pirates Football Predictions: <\/strong>5-7<\/p>\n

Ruffin McNeill has his work cut out for him in his first season as coach at East Carolina. This team has a ton of holes and it will be very tough for them to get back to another bowl game. Hopefully the fan base will understand that this kind of year was coming in the 2010, no matter who was the coach. <\/p>\n

The key stretch could be the October 23rd game against Marshall and the October 30th game at UCF. The Pirates must win one of these if they want to keep their bowl hopes alive. <\/p>\n

I think it will be a tough year for East Carolina. <\/p>\n
