The team that won it all in the 2007 season and then gained the NFC’s top seed in 2008 was expected to go places last year. Instead, New York’s NFC team went nowhere. Big Blue finished 8-8, a full three games out of playoff contention, making coach Tom Coughlin feel distinctly ill.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE TOP CAPPERS FOR NFL FOOTBALL BETTING THIS SEASON —–>

The biggest problem for the Giants was their lack of a pass rush. When the team won Super Bowl XLII a few seasons ago, it was able to get to the opposing quarterback on a consistent basis. However, with Michael Strahan retired and Osi Umenyiora injured (knee), the Giants simply didn’t have enough bodies.

Mathias Kiwanuka and Justin Tuck couldn’t carry the defense by themselves and with the secondary getting torched for the most part – Aaron Ross in particular – New York was toothless against most offenses. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Even the Denver Broncos and Kyle Orton (an injured Kyle Orton!) looked good against the Giants’ defense, and that’s the main reason why Coughlin’s crew could only manage a .500 year.

What had to sting even more for the franchise was the fact that the Giants started 5-0. Their decline was partly attributable to injuries, but for a team with playoff experience and high expectations, a number of winnable games should have been claimed.

A home loss to Arizona and another home loss to San Diego really hurt, and because of those twin setbacks, the Giants lacked leverage heading into the final weeks of the season.

Feeling the pressure of having to stay in the playoff chase, this once-steeley ballclub melted down the stretch, surrendering a total of 130 points in three of its last four games.

As the focus shifts to 2010, then, the main key is defense, defense and more defense for the Giants. The team is hoping that Umenyiora has healed to the point where he can once again be a factor on the defensive line.

With linebacker Antonio Pierce gone, the team picked up former Tennessee Titans outside linebacker Keith Bulluck and is in the process of shifting him to middle linebacker.

So intent are the Giants on making defensive changes and getting results that they’ve acquired a new coordinator. Bill Sheridan is out after a miserable 2009 season, and Perry Fewell – formerly the interim head coach of the Buffalo Bills (previously their defensive coordinator) – is in as the new defensive mastermind.

Everyone knows that the Giants will lack Super Bowl-level chops unless they get a receiver who can do what jailed star Plaxico Burress once did.

However, this team won’t even make the playoffs if it can’t attain a baseline level of competence and quality on the defensive side of the ball.

The pass rush and secondary coverage have to be a lot better, and Fewell needs to come up with the schemes that will put his defenders in good positions to succeed.

Giants 2010 Outlook

The Giants will not be a complete team. They’ll contend for a playoff spot and might well finish 10-6, but there are other teams in the NFC who are more equipped than Big Blue. The Giants will claim 10 scalps yet fall short of the postseason.

Giants 2010 Futures

Super Bowl Odds: +2550
Conference Odds: +1015
NFC East Odds: +145

2010 Giants Predictions

Place they’ll finish in NFC East: 2nd
Place they’ll finish in NFC Conference: 7th
Over/Under Season Wins Prediction: Over 8.5 Wins

***** Exclusive 100% Sportsbook Bonus!
