(1) New York Yankees (64-36): <\/strong>Still waiting for them to make a big splash at the deadline. Doesn\u2019t it seem so \u201cunlike\u201d them to be a spectator during all the hoopla?<\/p>\n 2. (9) San Francisco Giants (58-44): <\/strong>This is the hottest team in baseball right now. If they can just squeak into the big dance, you know they can make noise with their ridiculous pitching staff. Watch for them to buy a hitter before the weekend is up.<\/p>\n 3. (3) Tampa Bay Rays (62-38): <\/strong>No one should\u2019ve been surprised when they flew out of the gate and no one should be surprised that they\u2019re recovering quickly from a temporary swoon. This is still as talented a team as you\u2019ll find in the game.<\/p>\n 4. (5) Texas Rangers (59-42): <\/strong>Really starting to widen the gap in the American League West; Nelson Cruz\u2019s return makes them that much better. He\u2019s finding his groove again.<\/p>\n 5. (13) Minnesota Twins (56-46): <\/strong>Quietly back in the AL Central race. The man leading the charge: Delmon Young. Raise your hand if you knew he was third in the AL in RBI.<\/p>\n 6. (18) Philadelphia Phillies (55-46): <\/strong>It\u2019s the same principle as the Rays: too much talent to stay down. The Phillies have won seven straight \u2013 without Chase Utley \u2013 and just welcomed top prospect Domonic Brown to the bigs.<\/p>\n 7. (8) Chicago White Sox (56-44): <\/strong>Every few years, Ozzie Guillen looks like he\u2019s about to lose his job. Then the Pale Hose get good again and we\u2019re reminded that the guy is still a good manager behind the veil of craziness.<\/p>\n 8. (2) St. Louis Cardinals (56-45): <\/strong>They\u2019re not brutally slumping or anything; there just happen to be a ton of winning streaks this week pushing teams above them in the ranks.<\/p>\n 9. (6) San Diego Padres (59-40): <\/strong>2010 has been a banner season but I look at the hard charging teams around them \u2013 in both the divisional and wild card standings \u2013 and still expect them to miss the playoffs.<\/p>\n 10. (4) Atlanta Braves (58-42): <\/strong>Troy Glaus\u2019 horrific swoon reminds us that the Braves could probably use another bat to help down the stretch.<\/p>\n 11. (7) Boston Red Sox (58-44): <\/strong>They\u2019ve started stringing wins together again but they\u2019ll need the mini streak to become a tear if they want to keep pace with the surging Rays. <\/strong><\/span> 12. (11) Cincinnati Reds (57-46): <\/strong>I predicted before the season that Cincy would push the Cardinals hard but fall just short on account of their youth. I still think that\u2019ll be the case; the pitching staff probably won\u2019t be playoff-ready until next year.<\/p>\n 13. (19) Toronto Blue Jays (53-49): <\/strong>Another victim of AL East play. The Jays have been hot since the break but can\u2019t gain any ground in their division.<\/p>\n 14. (16) Oakland Athletics (51-49): <\/strong>Credit where credit is due. Somehow, they\u2019ve passed the Angels in the AL West. Maybe they\u2019re inspired because of the upcoming\u00a0Moneyball <\/em>movie?<\/p>\n 15. (15) Los Angeles Dodgers (54-47): <\/strong>Still very much in the hunt but who knew their hitting would fail them at this point in the year? I would\u2019ve guessed pitching.<\/p>\n 16. (14) Detroit Tigers (51-49): <\/strong>Picked a brutal time to slump with both the White Sox and Twinkies surging. They could fall out of the AL Central race fast.<\/p>\n 17. (10) Los Angeles Angels (52-52): <\/strong>Getting Dan Haren was a coup, but the Angels are eight and a half back of Texas. That\u2019s a lot of ground to make up \u2013 especially when they can\u2019t convince sluggers to join them and help (read: Lee, Derek).<\/p>\n 18. (20) Florida Marlins (50-51): <\/strong>I know they play in a tough division. But when I see the inspiring efforts of San Diego, Toronto and Oakland \u2013 I can\u2019t help but think the Marlins are a disappointment. They arguably have more talent than those other three teams.<\/p>\n 19. (17) New York Mets (51-50): <\/strong>The reality is that they have no business calling themselves buyers right now. But don\u2019t you have the sneaking suspicion they\u2019ll do something crazy in the next few days?<\/p>\n 20. (22) Milwaukee Brewers (48-55): <\/strong>They\u2019d be silly not to cash in Corey Hart in this lost season.<\/p>\n 21.
