Most of the contenders remain contenders, but it\u2019s worth noting that we\u2019ve got some fascinating parity across the majors.<\/p>\n (Previous ranking in brackets)<\/p>\n 1. (1) New York Yankees (59-34): <\/strong>Now that Andy Pettitte is hurt and Phil Hughes is fatigued, you have to wonder if missing out on Cliff Lee will come back to bite them. They better get in on Roy Oswalt.<\/p>\n 2. (10) St. Louis Cardinals (54-41): <\/strong>That\u2019s more like it. The Cards aren\u2019t the deepest team in the league but they just have too much high-end star power to stay down for long. And it looks like Oswalt may join them soon.<\/p>\n 3. (8) Tampa Bay Rays (57-37): <\/strong>Having arguably baseball\u2019s top farm system does wonders. Not only did it help build this team, but the Rays can part with a Wade Davis or Jeff Niemann should they want to acquire a bat. Jeremy Hellickson is waiting in the wings.<\/p>\n 4. (6) Atlanta Braves (55-39): <\/strong>They\u2019re sitting pretty right now but I still worry that some of their creaky vets (Billy Wagner, Troy Glaus, etc.) are due to break down at the worst possible time.<\/p>\n 5. (2) Texas Rangers (55-40): <\/strong>Cliff Lee has\u00a0seven <\/em>walks all season. He has more wins than walks. Methinks the Rangers won\u2019t regret this deal at any moment \u2013 even if he leaves this winter.<\/p>\n 6. (11) San Diego Padres (55-38): <\/strong>If it weren\u2019t for Mat Latos\u2019 sneeze, they may be ranked a few spots higher. Their 2010 season should give hope to any hopeless team at the start of 2011.<\/p>\n 7. (7) Boston Red Sox (53-42): <\/strong>As great as Adrian Beltre has been, time will tell if he can join the lore of great playoff performers in Boston. And that\u2019s if Boston even reaches the big dance.<\/p>\n 8. (4) Chicago White Sox (52-42): <\/strong>Has there been a better pitcher in the majors than Gavin Floyd over the last two months?<\/p>\n 9. (14) San Francisco Giants (52-43): <\/strong>They\u2019re determined to win the NL West, so expect the Giants to acquire a major power bat soon. Probably Corey Hart or Jose Bautista. There\u2019s a good chance Jonathan Sanchez will change addresses as a result.<\/p>\n 10. (5) Los Angeles Angels (51-46): <\/strong>Any chance they try to pry Prince Fielder from Milwaukee and repeat their Mark Teixeira deal of two years ago? Hard to say. They keep winning even without Kendry Morales anyway. 11. (12) Cincinnati Reds (53-43): <\/strong>With so many uber-competitive gamers on this roster (Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Scott Rolen), I could see the Reds winning the Wildcard battle.<\/p>\n 12. (17) Colorado Rockies (51-43): <\/strong>Troy Tulowitzki has started his rehab assignment already. When he rejoins the lineup, it will almost be time for Colorado\u2019s annual August-September tear.<\/p>\n 13. (9) Minnesota Twins (50-45): <\/strong>Concussions are just so finicky. We really have no idea when Justin Morneau will be himself again or if he can help keep the Twinkies competitive in the AL Central.<\/p>\n 14. (15) Detroit Tigers (49-44): <\/strong>The Tigers offense continues to hold up but what about the pitching? They can\u2019t use a two-man rotation if they make the playoffs.<\/p>\n 15. (16) Los Angeles Dodgers (50-45): <\/strong>It\u2019s been a turbulent season in La-La Land, yet they\u2019re quietly just six games out of first place in the NL West. Still time for Joe Torre to right the ship in what could be his final season.<\/p>\n 16. (24) Oakland Athletics (48-47): <\/strong>It\u2019s \u201cnice\u201d when they have a surge but they just don\u2019t have enough talent to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n 17. (3) New York Mets (49-46): <\/strong>I think the recent slide is a trend. Jason Bay has been a nightmare. None of the Mets is hitting much recently.<\/p>\n 18. (13) Philadelphia Phillies (48-46): <\/strong>Never thought we\u2019d see them this low in the ranks in 2010. Is it even fair for them to call themselves buyers?<\/p>\n 19. (18) Toronto Blue Jays (48-47): <\/strong>Above .500 through 95 games in the AL East? Alex Anthopoulos deserves a medal.<\/p>\n 20. (20) Florida Marlins (46-49): <\/strong>For all the fanfare Ubaldo Jimenez gets, Josh Johnson may steal the NL Cy Young award when all is said and done.<\/p>\n 21.
