We begin the day with some sad news from the baseball world.<\/p>\n
MLB news: George Steinbrenner dead at 80<\/strong><\/p>\n We lost arguably the most famous team owner in sports history this morning when George Steinbrenner passed away at age 80. Owner of the New York Yankees for the last 36 years, he suffered a massive heart attack this morning.<\/p>\n After taking over ownership in 1973, he engineered 11 American League pennants and seven World Series titles.<\/p>\n Whether it was his many championships, his infamous \u201cno facial hair\u201d rule, firing Billy Martin five different times or being hilariously portrayed on\u00a0Seinfeld <\/em>by Larry David, Steinbrenner was a highly visible presence in Yankee lore and will be forever.<\/p>\n Steinbrenner\u2019s passing comes during the MLB All-Star festivities. Last night, David Ortiz won the Home Run Derby.<\/p>\n He smacked 11 homers in the final round to top Hanley Ramirez and dedicated his victory to the late Jose Lima.<\/p>\n MMA news: Jose Conseco loses to a 60-year-old man<\/strong><\/p>\n Time to cheer up with some hilarious, absurd news. Publicity hog Jose Canseco\u2019s latest stunt: challenging a 60-year-old man to a boxing match. The former MLB slugger and disgraced steroid monger desperately wants a bout against Herschel Walker and figured a victory would up his chances. But the idea blew up in Canseco\u2019s face.<\/p>\n He lost a 39-37 four-round decision to Gary Hogan, largely because he tired in the later rounds. <\/strong><\/span> NBA news: Al Jefferson to Utah? Michael Jordan may veto megadeal with Raptors; Mike Miller joins the Heat<\/strong><\/p>\n The Utah Jazz lost Carlos Boozer to free agency but it\u2019s possible they won\u2019t miss a beat. They\u2019re reportedly very close to acquiring Al Jefferson from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jefferson averaged 17.1 points and 6.3 rebounds in 2009-10.<\/p>\n Are they done deals or not? After several days of conflicting reports, we still don\u2019t know if the two trades between the Charlotte Bobcats, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors are actually happening.<\/p>\n Some publications say the transactions are done: Hedo Turkoglu for Leandro Barbosa in the Toronto\/Phoenix deal, Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans for Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw in the Charlotte deal. But the latter trade may have hit a snag with Michael Jordan having second thoughts.<\/p>\n The NBA\u2019s free agent frenzy continues. Mike Miller joined the circus in Miami after playing last season with the Wizards. He signed a five-year, $30-million deal. Quentin Richardson signed with the Orlando Magic and in doing so all but confirmed that the Magic won\u2019t match Chicago\u2019s offer sheet to J.J. Redick.<\/p>\n A few other players are generating bidding wars. Both the Celtics and Bulls are reportedly after Josh Howard \u2013 and maybe even the Heat as well. The Mavs are trying hard to poach Udonis Haslem from Miami with an offer believed to be at least $20 million for three years.<\/p>\n The Phoenix Suns are set to acquire Josh Childress. They\u2019ve agreed to a sign-and-trade with the Hawks and will pay him $34 million over five years.
