Today’s sports gossip is high on drama, covering everything from a drug overdose to the great instant replay debate.

Tennis news: Jennifer Capriati recovering after accidental drug overdose

Hard to believe Jennifer Capriati is still just 34 years old. It’s a testament to how good she was at such a young age. The former teen tennis star – a three-time Grand Slam champion and a French Open finalist at age 14 – suffered an accidental overdose of prescribed medication on Monday. Lacey Wickline, a family spokesperson, would not disclose how Capriati was discovered or who notified emergency services. Capriati battled off-court problems during her career, getting arrested in 1993 for shoplifting and in 1994 for marijuana possession. She was also in drug rehab in 1994, reportedly for crack cocaine and heroin use.

The Capriati story overshadowed a wild past 24 hours of competition at Wimbledon in during which Andy Roddick (five sets against Yen-hsun Lu) and Venus Williams (straights sets against Tsvetana Pironkova) were both ousted in major upsets.

World Cup soccer news: FIFA to reconsider instant replay

After a very clear equalizing goal in England’s game against Germany was waved off despite being two feet over the goal line – and the English failed to stay in the game after that – fans and viewers were outraged at the refereeing and, more importantly, the lack of instant replay at the World Cup. Apparently, FIFA president Sepp Blatter was listening.

He apologized to both England and Mexico, which was also affected by an officiating error. Blatter also promised to reopen the discussion about using video replay and video review once the 2010 World Cup ended.

NBA news: Suns still after Amare Stoudemire; Mavs pursuing Joe Johnson?

The NBA rumor mill churns on with free agency just two days away. After reaching the Western Conference final this past spring, the Phoenix Suns aren’t ready to roll over and let their star forward walk just yet. The general-manager-less Suns are reportedly making a last-ditch contract extension pitch to Amare Stoudemire today. He has $17.6 million owed to him in the final year of his contract; that means he’ll opt out and leave Phoenix unless the Suns offer him a max-salary deal.

If Phoenix loses Stoudemire, it will reportedly make a push for free-agent forward David Lee, who likely won’t return to the Knicks.

NBA sources have suggested Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is after Joe Johnson. He plans to attempt a sign-and-trade with the Atlanta Hawks to land the departing shooting guard, who averaged 21 points per game last regular season.

The only GM who will almost definitely do a sign and trade, however, is Toronto’s Bryan Colangelo. The Raptors are simply that convinced Bosh is leaving.

MLB news: Rays reeling after dugout tiff between Longoria and Upton

The Tampa Bay Rays are coming apart at the seams. After their outstanding start to the season, they suddenly sit third in the American League East behind the Yankees and Red Sox. Their former teammate, Edwin Jackson, no-hit them on Friday. On Sunday, tensions boiled over as Evan Longoria and B.J. Upton almost came to blows in the dugout.

Upton got caught pulling a Hanley Ramirez and dogging it in pursuit of a fly ball that reached the gap. Longoria took exception to it and the rest was history.

It’s enough to make you wonder if Tampa will try to move the disappointing Upton this offseason.

Sports water cooler headlines and sports gossip for Tuesday June 29th, 2010.
