In the sides\u2019 first meeting at this point of the FIFA World Cup, second ranked Spain will clash with Iberian Peninsula neighbor, third-ranked Portugal, in what is sure to be an exciting finale to the Round of 16 matches on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The two teams have played each other a total of 32 times with Spain winning 15, losing five and drawing 12. They have outscored the Portuguese 71 to 37 in those matches. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After dropping their first match of the group phase to underdog Switzerland, La Roja shut out the Hondurans, and then needing a win to advance, edged out a 10-man Chile 2-1. Their run was far from dominating, as a single goal from Chile would have sent the Euro 2008 champions home early, but they were able to hang on for the win to top Group H on a one-goal differential.<\/p>\n

Portugal fared no better also needing a win in their third group game to advance after a scoreless draw with the Ivory Coast and a 7-0 shellacking of North Korea. It was until another scoreless draw against five-time World Cup winners Brazil, that they were catapulted into the final 16, finishing in second place in Group G with five points.<\/p>\n

A Seleccao das Quinas are led by Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who finally got the monkey off his back with a goal against the Koreans, his first in 16 months for the national side. Ronaldo seems to be playing well, and will get some much-needed help from midfield playmaker Deco, who after missing the last two games is set to return to Portugal’s line-up after recovering from a nagging hip problem.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s answer to all of this is Barcelona striker David Villa, who has three of the team\u2019s four goals so far at South Africa, and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, who hasn\u2019t had many chances and has yet to score, but is equally as dangerous.<\/p>\n

Both coaches have near-to-full-strength squads from which to choose, though former Real Madrid boss Del Bosque will be without key midfielder Xabi Alonso, who limped out of their game against Chile in the 73rd minute with a sprained ankle, and defender Raul Albiol.<\/p>\n

A superior Portugal defense will force Spain to push forward as a whole to create scoring opportunities and in turn will give more space to Portugal to counter-attack with their lightening speed.<\/p>\n

Spain, on the other hand are a more fluid side and will try to pace the match with their ticky-tack passing and off-the-ball movement, making Portugal pick up the defensive tempo and opening space.<\/p>\n
