The Belmont is a grade I stakes race for three year old Thoroughbreds with a total prize purse of $1,000,000.<\/p>\n<p>It is contested on a dirt track over a distance 1 \u00bd mile (12 Furlongs), the longest of the three races (the Kentucky Derby is 1 1\/8 mile and Preakness 1 3\/16 mile) that comprise the Triple Crown.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<strong>Super Saver<\/strong> winning the Derby and\u00a0<strong>Lookin at Lucky<\/strong> winning the Preakness there is no Triple Crown title on the line this year. The last horse to win all three was\u00a0<strong>Affirmed,<\/strong> back in 1978. <iframe allowtransparency='true' src='http:\/\/ff.connextra.com\/Bodog\/selector\/client?client=Bodog&#038;placement=Ext_RS_Racebook_250x250&#038;cxt_aff_id=151627' class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 1px; border: 3px solid #FFFFFF;\" width='250' height='250' scrolling='no' frameborder='0' style='border-width:0'><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One thing is for certain is that we will have a third champion this season as both these previous winners are not expected to run in the Belmont.<\/p>\n<p>One of the horses that is expected to be in the field of 12 to 13 entries is\u00a0<strong>Ice Box<\/strong>. Trained by Nick Zito, the runner up at Kentucky Derby by 2 \u00bd lengths was held out of the Preakness to specifically train for the added distance of this race. <\/p>\n<p>Prior to that, he won the grade I Florida Derby on March 20<sup>th<\/sup>. He should go off as one of the favorites to win this race.<\/p>\n<p>Another horse that ran in the Derby and skipped the Preakness, but is expected in the field for the Belmont is\u00a0<strong>Stately Victor<\/strong>. Trained by Mike Maker and most likely ridden by Alan Garcia, this horse finished eighth in Kentucky, almost nine lengths off of the lead. Prior to that, he won the grade I Blue Grass Stakes with Garcia aboard as a 40-1 long shot.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the other horses that are planning to run in the Belmont next week include\u00a0<strong>Make Music for Me<\/strong>; who finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby. He is trained by Alexis Barba and would most likely be ridden by Joel Rosario.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dublin<\/strong>; who would possibly be the only horse that participated in all three Triple Crown races. He finished seventh in the Derby and fifth in the Preakness. He is trained by D. Wayne Lucas and would be ridden by Garrett Gomez.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Dude<\/strong>; whose spirited run in the Preakness landed him a second place finish.
