Through a series of prep races, a field of 20 of the best three year old Thoroughbreds based on graded stakes race earnings has been assembled to compete in the first leg of this year\u2019s Triple Crown, which also includes the Preakness and the Belmont.<\/p>\n

This is the second year in a row that the Derby favorite had to pull out of the race.<\/p>\n Last year\u00a0Quality Road<\/strong> was a late scratch, possibly opening the door for 50-1 shot\u00a0Mine That Bird<\/strong> to pull off the upset.<\/p>\n The new favorite for Saturday is\u00a0Lookin at Lucky<\/strong> at +200. Trained by Bob Baffert, this horse won the Eclipse Award as the Two Year Old Champion Male.<\/p>\n As a three year old he won the grade II Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn on 13th<\/sup>, but stumbled to a third place finish in the Santa Anita Derby in his final prep race. Sidney\u2019s Candy<\/strong> is currently +300 and will most likely go off as the second favorite come Saturday. This is trainer John Sadler\u2019s prized entry into the Derby and already a Triple Crown winner of sorts having won the San Vicente Stakes, the San Felipe Stakes, and the Santa Anita Derby all at Santa Anita Racetrack earlier this season.<\/p>\n Things get a bit more interesting from there as the next group of horses come in at +1000.<\/p>\n Awesome Act, Ice Box, Dublin, Noble\u2019s Promise<\/strong>, and\u00a0Super Saver<\/strong> all fall into this category. The most notable horse from this group would be Ice Box, who won the grade I Florida Derby on March 20th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n Another group of strong contenders at +1200 include\u00a0American Lion, Endorsement<\/strong>, and\u00a0Mission Impazible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Mission Impazible is trained by Todd Pletcher, who has a number of horses in the Derby field. He comes into this race having won the grade II Louisiana Derby on March 27th in his final prep race.<\/p>\n When you look at the rest of the field, a couple of possible long shots jump out as having a legitimate chance to win this race.<\/p>\n My top picks would be\u00a0Paddy O\u2019Prado<\/strong> and\u00a0Stately Victor<\/strong> who are both at +2500. Paddy O\u2019Prado, trained by Dale Romans finished a strong second in the grade II Blue Grass Stakes his last time out.<\/p>\n The horse he lost to was Stately Victor, who won this race as a 40-1 long shot.<\/p>\n AMERICAN LION\t70\/1 <\/strong> Lookin at Lucky is set as the early favorite for the 2010 version of the Run for the Roses.
