The 36-years center midfielder is surrounded by a host of promising youngsters such as Guillermo Ochoa, Efrain Juarez, Andres Guardado, Arsenal\u2019s Carlos Vela and Tottenham striker Giovani dos Santos\u2014a 20-year old M\u00e9xico-born footballer that is the present and future of the attacking, creativity part of the Mexican midfield.<\/p>\n Along with skipper Rafael Marquez, this side should lift Mexico beyond the Round of 16, where they have been knocked out at the last four FIFA World Cup finals.<\/p>\n After beating Belize with a minimimal effort in the second qualifying round, Mexico were drawn into a tough group with Jamaica, Canada and Honduras in the following phase. El Tri struggled and only scraped in the fourth and final round on goal difference. El Tri then shot up from fifth to second place in the final six-team qualification group in the CONCACAF Zone, winning five games, drawing one and losing just the one, landing then in second place behind eternal rivals USA. Their most impressive performance of all came in the Gold Cup final in July when, after being level at nil-nil with the USA at half time, rallied for five in the second half crushing the Americans 5-0.<\/p>\n If they can show a similar ability to step up their game on the World Cup stage, the Los Tricolores could be dangerous. Overall, in a very busy year, they played 20 matches, won 11, lost six, and drew three.<\/p>\n El Tri have advanced out of the group stage in the last four World Cups and have the talent to do it again.<\/p>\n M\u00e9xico’s goal is the same as it has been since its last quarterfinal appearance in 1986: Advance to the semifinals.
