After a hiatus, the daily news beat is back and there\u2019s plenty to discuss. As the Final Four weekend begins, it\u2019s fitting that college hoops have grabbed the most significant sports headlines over the last 24 hours. <\/p>\n
NCAA basketball news: 96-team tourney almost a done deal; John Wall not guaranteed to declare<\/strong><\/p>\n Whether we like it or not, the NCAA is very close to expanding the March Madness tournament to a 96-team field.<\/p>\n The league has ironed out most of the details, including revenue distribution and how much time off the players would have. Logistically, the beefed-up March Madness would take place over the same time frame, but the top 32 teams would all receive first-round byes.<\/p>\n It\u2019s interesting for sure, but there\u2019s one question I haven\u2019t heard asked yet. If any of the teams ranked 65-96 upsets one of the 33-64 seeds, doesn\u2019t that set the underdog victor up for a disastrously lopsided beating in the next round? Imagine Duke battling the No. 96 school in the country because that plucky school got lucky with a buzzer beater in round 1. Sounds like potential for a laugher of a game, no?<\/p>\n Could missing out on a national championship this year delay John Wall\u2019s ascension to the NBA?<\/p>\n Though Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari believes that Wall is done as a college player, Wall isn\u2019t entirely sure he\u2019ll declare for the draft this season. He says that \u201ccollege is a great experience\u201d and he \u201cdidn\u2019t think it\u2019d be this fun.\u201d Really, John? You didn\u2019t think being the best college basketball player in the country would give you a nice lifestyle on campus?<\/p>\n NFL news: Shaun Rogers the latest player in trouble with the law<\/strong><\/p>\n Do NFL players believe it\u2019s their\u00a0duty <\/em>to commit crimes during the offseason or what? The latest goon is big Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers.<\/p>\n He was arrested yesterday at a security checkpoint when officials noticed a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his carry-on bag. Rogers was taken away \u201cwithout innocent\u201d \u2013 what a model citizen \u2013 but the stupidity of the incident blows my mind. Has Rogers never flown before? Does he not know about the whole \u201cmetal detector thingy\u201d that airports have used for decades?<\/p>\n And, worse yet, why did he feel it was necessary to fly with a loaded weapon? Sigh.<\/p>\n MLB news: Giants take bobbleheads to a new level; Curt Schilling rips Phillies<\/strong><\/p>\n As if Tim Lincecum bobblehead dolls wouldn\u2019t be popular enough already on their July 17 release, the San Francisco Giants are going the extra mile with their collectibles. The first 20,000 fans will get a standard-issue doll but six lucky fans will receive one with\u00a0real human hair<\/em>.<\/p>\n The hair won\u2019t be Lincecum\u2019s own. It will be \u201csomeone else\u2019s.\u201d To me, that\u2019s creepier.<\/p>\n Who knows what type of person donated the hair \u2013 or who was murdered \u2013 for the sake of the dolls?<\/p>\n Curt Schilling is made at the Phillies and it ain\u2019t an April Fool\u2019s joke. He laced into his former team yesterday for not keeping Cliff Lee.<\/p>\n While the Phillies moved Lee to restock their prospects cupboard after acquiring Roy Halladay, Schilling claimed the Lee trade to Seattle was \u201cthe stupidest thing they\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n Naturally, Schilling is biased; he believes in the logic of keeping two Cy-Young-caliber pitchers on the same team, as it worked with him and Randy Johnson in Arizona and with Pedro Martinez in Boston.<\/p>\n <\/strong> Sports water cooler headlines and sports gossip for Friday April 2nd, 2010.
