The Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Washington on Wednesday night in the third instalment in what has become one of the best rivalries in the game. Every match between these two gets better and even though they are not battling for any significant positioning or standing Wednesday\u2019s game should be epic. <\/p>\n

The Pittsburgh Penguins come into the Wednesday night matchup in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings, a mind boggling 16 points behind the Caps. They are stumbling a bit right now, going 5-3-2 in their last 10 games which includes a 2-3-2 stretch over their past seven games. The Pens are tied with a surging New Jersey team owns the tiebreaker on the Pens thanks to a higher win total and because of their game in hand. Pittsburgh is going to need a big effort to knock off the Caps and to keep pace with the red hot Devils. <\/p>\n

What is left to say about the Washington Capitals? They currently have 106 points and have 10 games left to maybe hit the inconceivable 120 point plateau. The Caps have been incredible and should lock up first place overall in the NHL late this week or early next week. That\u2019s right; they\u2019ll have little to play for during the final three weeks of the regular season. Washington is number one in offense, wins, power play and is near the top of the league in defense as well. The Caps are a four line bully whose only enemy is themselves. <\/p>\n

This game is always billed as the Crosby vs. Ovechkin show and rightfully so. The two have played epic contests against each other and every matchup seems to raise the levels of each other\u2019s games. Let\u2019s focus on the supporting casts knowing that Crosby and Ovechkin will be present, will be focussed and will be superb. <\/p>\n

For the Pittsburgh Penguins the big question is going to be the health of Evgeni Malkin. He is an X-factor going into this game. If he can\u2019t go, the Pens will be at a major disadvantage and even if he can go, the Pens might still be overmatched. Alexi Ponikarovski, Pacal Dupuis, Jordan Staal and Chris Kunitz are players that are going to have to step up down the stretch and take some of the focus off of Sid the Kid. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is playing the best hockey of the season for the Pens and appears to be peaking at just the right time. \"Sports<\/p>\n

Alex Ovechkin came back from his suspension and scored in his first game back. He has missed 10 games this year yet has 45 goals! His supporting cast has been just as good. The Caps have 7 players with 20 or more goals and have 11 players with at least 30 points. That is equivalent of almost four complete forward lines that have 30 or more points! Unreal! Goaltender Jose Theodore is 16-0-2 with a 2.40 goals-against average and .927 save percentage since Jan. 13. He has wins in six straight starts and a GAA of 1.80 over the stretch. Unreal! <\/p>\n

Wednesday night\u2019s game is for bragging rights. Although the Washington Capitals have only lost four times at home all season, something is pushing me in the direction of the Pens. This game is FAR MORE important for them than it is for the Caps. Pittsburgh has a lot to play for and has a good chance of upsetting a Washington team that might be a bit complacent and be a bit rusty after a three day break from action. <\/p>\n
