They brought the momentum of that win into the NCAA\u2019s with a convincing first round 80-71 win over the seven seed Richmond Spiders in what can only be called a minor upset. Anyone who has followed the WCC knew the Gaels were for real and now their secret is out.<\/p>\n One thing this team has is a couple of big time players that can step up when they need it the most. In the win over Gonzaga, junior G Mickey McConnell equaled his career high with 26 points and senior F-C Ben Allen had a career high 20 points.<\/p>\n In the win over Richmond, it was senior C Omar Samhan that did most of the damage with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Playing with a high level of confidence, this team presents problems for whoever they play.<\/p>\n Villanova followed up their free fall down the stretch of the regular season and their early exit in the Big East Tournament with an uninspired 73-70 overtime win over the upstart Robert Morris Colonials.<\/p>\n Due to an undisclosed disciplinary situation, the Wildcats top two players; senior G Scottie Reynolds and junior G Corey Fisher were on the bench when this game started.<\/p>\n While their benching was short lived, it seemed to be a distraction for most of this game. Reynolds shooting slump continued as he went 2 of 15 from the field but was deadly from the foul line going from 15-16, ending the day with a team high 20 points. While the officiating in this game heavily favored the Wildcats, this was the kind of game that Villanova relied heavily on their NCAA Tournament experience to pull out the win.<\/p>\n It was reminiscent of last year\u2019s come from behind victory over American in the first round. After that scare they went all the way to the Final Four before losing to the eventual champion, North Carolina.
