The Road to the Kentucky Derby – March 4th<\/strong><\/p>\n Leading up to horse racing\u2019s premier event; the Kentucky Derby this May, there are close to 60 prep races between the beginning of the year and the end of April that will not only shape this year\u2019s field, but give us a good idea which horses will go off as the favorite to win the Derby and possibly go on to earn the Triple Crown by winning the Preakness and the Belmont as well. Here is a brief re-cap of the key races from last weekend.<\/p>\n The Miracle Wood Stakes \u2013Saturday February 27th from Laurel Park<\/strong><\/p>\n The Miracle Wood Stakes is an ungraded stakes race for three year olds with a total prize purse of $90,000. It is contested on a dirt track over a distance of seven Furlongs. Going off as the odds-on-favorite in a field on ten, Dont Blame the Cat was able to keep pace in the middle of the pack and grab the lead with less than 70 yards left to win by a length. The Borderland Derby \u2013\u00a0Saturday February 27th from Sunland Park<\/strong><\/p>\n The Borderland Derby is an ungraded stakes race for three year olds with a total prize purse of $100,000. It is contested over a distance of 1 1\/16 mile. The outcome of this race came down to steward\u2019s inquiry after Raise the Bridle was the first to cross the finish line but was later disqualified for interference elevating Storming Saint from second to first and dropping Raise the Bridle to second. After pulling away from the pack, both horses repeatedly banged each other down the stretch causing jockey Luis Contreras to lodge a formal objection.\u00a0 Storming Saint went off as the 9-5 favorite and this decision gave the colt his first stakes race victory. Amen Baby came in third and second favorite Tango Tango finished a disappointing sixth. Down the stretch Regal Warrior made a late charge but Dont Blame the Cat held on for the win. Regal Warrior was second and Cole T held on for third. Trained by Rick Dutrow, it remains to be seen if Dont Blame the Cat remains on the Derby Trail, but four out of the previous 14 Miracle Wood Stakes winners did run in a Triple Crown race.<\/p>\n
