The Road to the Kentucky Derby- February 23rd<\/strong><\/p>\n Leading up to horse racing\u2019s premier event; the Kentucky Derby this May, there are close to 60 prep races between the beginning of the year and the end of April that will not only shape this year\u2019s field, but give us a good idea which horses will go off as the favorite to win the Derby and possibly go on to earn the Triple Crown by winning the Preakness and the Belmont as well. Here is a brief re-cap of the key races from last weekend.<\/p>\n The Risen Star-Saturday February 20th from Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots<\/strong><\/p>\n The Risen Star is a grade II stakes race for three year olds with a total prize purse of $300,000. It is contested over a distance of 1 1\/16 mile. Going off as the second favorite, Discreetly Mine broke clean out of the gate and stayed comfortably in the lead until the wire, winning this race by 1 \u00bd\u00a0lengths. Drosselmeyer, the 2-1 favorite briefly challenged along the rail until the final turn, but faded down the stretch to finish fourth. Tempted to Tapit hung on by a neck to take second, while 53-1 underdog Northern Giant finished third. Trained by Todd Pletcher out of E. Paul Robsham Stables, Discreetly Mine has emerged as a serious Kentucky Derby hopeful with this win. He now has two wins and three second place finishes in his seven starts.<\/p>\n El Camino Real Derby-Saturday February 20th from Golden Gate Fields<\/strong><\/p>\n The El Camino Real Derby is a grade III stakes race for three year olds with a total prize purse of $150,000. It is contested over 1 1\/8 mile. Connemara, another one of Todd Pletcher\u2019s Derby hopefuls went off as the odds-on-favorite at 13-10 and did not disappoint. Recovering nicely from a slow start that found him last in the nine horse field after the first \u00bd\u00a0mile, he won the El Camino by a 1 \u00bc\u00a0lengths over Haimish Hy, who went off at 25-1. Posse Power finished third, 2 \u00bc lengths off the lead. Ranger Heartley, who won the California Derby earlier this year led for much of the race but could not hold off the pack and faded to a disappointing 5th\u00a0place finish. Connemara has now won three times in his last four starts along with a second place finish in the California Derby.<\/p>\n His next outing could be April 3rd\u00a0in the Santa Anita Derby; a grade I stakes race that is the final West Coast prep race for the Kentucky Derby.<\/p>\n There are several key races this weekend that will feature some of the best three year olds in the country.
