They seem to alternate between a savvy veteran team making one last run at a title before the warranty runs out on Tim Duncan and a group that is bound and determined to be just another team heading for a first-round playoff upset.<\/p>\n
Whatever the case, the group that takes the court late Thursday night in the second game of the TNT doubleheader bears little resemblance to the team that was winning title after title only a few seasons ago. Duncan had one of the great rebounding games (27) of the season last week against the Hawks, but a few nights later looked listless in a loss at Denver. Antonio McDyess, Manu Ginobili and Richard Jefferson are also putting some miles on their tires.<\/p>\n
Gregg Popovich is hoping to keep the big guns healthy, make a decent late-season run for playoff position and head into the post-season with a little momentum, take advantage of extra days off during the playoffs and hope for the best when the rubber really hits the road.<\/p>\n
The Portland game is the second of a relatively easy 8-game road trip that started Wednesday in Sacramento and finishes after the All-Star break in Detroit on Feb. 21.<\/p>\n
