The Road to the Kentucky Derby- January 26<\/strong>th<\/strong><\/sup><\/p>\n Leading up to horse racing\u2019s premier event; the Kentucky Derby this May, there are close to 60 prep races between the beginning of the year and the end of April that will not only shape this year\u2019s field, but give us a good idea which horses will go off as the favorite to win the Derby and possibly go on to earn the Triple Crown by winning the Preakness and the Belmont as well. Here is a brief re-cap of the key races from last weekend.<\/p>\n The Holy Bull- Saturday January 23<\/strong>rd<\/strong><\/sup> from Gulfstream<\/strong><\/p>\n The Holy Bull is a Grade III stakes race with a prize purse of $150,000 that is contested on a one turn 1 mile track. Heading into this race Jackson Bend was the favorite going off at 8-5, but Philadelphia Park based Winslow Homer stole the show in his stakes race debut this past Saturday, winning by three-quarters of a length. Winslow Homer, who went off at 7-2 in this race captured his third win in four starts. Jackson Bend, who swept the Florida Stallion Series at Calder, lost for the first time after five straight wins. Lecomte Stakes- Saturday January 23<\/strong>rd<\/strong><\/sup> from Fair Grounds<\/strong><\/p>\n The Lecomte is a Grade III stakes race for three year olds with a prize purse of $100,000. It is contested over a distance of 1 mile. The favorite for this race was Maximus Ruler going off at 2-1, but Ron the Greek, a mild long shot at 7-1 pulled away down the stretch to win by 1 \u00bd lengths. Florida bred Ron the Greek won his first stakes race and this was his third win overall in four lifetime starts. Maximus Ruler set a quick pace holding off both Depaul on the outside and Cool Bullet in the lane, before yielding the lead and finishing second. Letsgetitonmon made a late push to get past Cool Bullet to get the show spot finishing just a half length behind Maximus Ruler. The Lecomte is the first of three graded stakes races at Fair Grounds for three year olds. Next up is the $300,000 Grade III Risen Star at 1 1\/16 miles on February 20th<\/sup> and the then the $750,000 Grade II Louisiana Derby over nine furlongs on March 27th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n Next weekend\u2019s big races include the Dancing Count Stakes from Laurel and the WEBN Stakes from Turfway.<\/p>\n Before the Kentucky Derby this May, there are close to 60 prep races between the beginning of the year and the end of April.
