Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli really improved his play over the balance of the year, and other tailbacks (notably, freshman LaMichael James) carried the load in lieu of suspended starter LeGarrette Blount. Masoli and the Ducks can pass just enough to keep a defense honest, where they then gouge opponents on the ground; James finished eighth in the nation in rush yards\/game. Yet apart from the USC Trojans, Oregon hasn’t faced a defense as talented as Ohio State’s. Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel receives flak for being too vanilla and mis-using athletic specimen QB Terrelle Pryor, yet for all the criticism you’d have to search long and hard to find a more consistently successful program. January bowl games have been the Buckeye M.O. for as long as many young people have been watching college football. Ohio State will use its trademark watertight defense and calculated special teams in an attempt to grind the game out of Oregon’s hands. <\/p>\n How the Buckeye front seven fares and how the secondary tackles James, Blount et al. in the open field will indeed showcase the game’s outcome.<\/p>\n Both teams have specific strengths, but if Oregon finds seams and starts dumping points on OSU, will the Buckeye offense be able to answer? <\/p>\n Tressel must hope so if the Big Ten is to reverse a recent pitiful showing against Pac-10 opponents in the prestigious Rose Bowl. <\/p>\n Fundamentally, college football is more about big plays now than it used to be, which doesn’t bode well for the Scarlet and Grey.<\/p>\n 2009 Team Stats<\/strong><\/p>\n Team Offense<\/strong>: Ohio St. 71st Team Defense<\/strong>: Ohio St. 5th
